Whopeee - thanks midlife the numbers RE growing. And a good job too as SOI will be needing all the funding that can be raised by joe-public after the Sports Council announced today that they were cutting funding to SOI by €250,000. So, the more we can get on the run the better.

just to throw another idea into the mix. there's usually a galway run in april and was wondering as dublin-limerick-galway-dublin in one day is quite a trek, especially for 5ers a long way from loop, could it not be made a fundraising weekend. dublin-limerick- galway, stay over and do run on saturday passing the fundraising bucket around at stops. overnight in galway again sat night and run back to dublin on sunday doing a bit of bucket passing on route. could make it a theme weekend to draw attention to the fund raising. i'm sure there will be a general licence for fundraising that weekend.

Thanks for your suggetion Barney. In answer to your question on the permit - that weekend SOI have one nationally> I am hoping, with help from JL to have a route worked out and your suggestion will be in the melting pot.

Tom

There should be an update here soon regarding the route. as it's gonna be a two day event there is plenty of opportunity for members who are unable to commit for the two days to join en route.

Subject to confirmation, the proposed route looks something like this:

Day 1:
Limerick <> Cork <> Waterford<> Kilkenny<> Carlow<>Newbridge/Naas<>Dublin

Day 2:
Dublin<>Portlaoise<>Tullamore<>Athlone<> Ballinasloe<>Tuam<>Galway<>Ennis<>Limerick

Looking good guys, sounds a bit like the maracycles we used to do to Belfast in the Co op north days, 1 day up 1500 bikes, next day back 3000 bikes.

So the overnight is planned in the East then John?

Was just thinking that it would be a long one over 2 days.

Heres some info on the time frame for that route John :
Day1 :

Heres a Map :

The route is 396kms and driving normally would take 6.5 hours ... assuming just 30 mins collecting time in each place (the 8 places listed), an hour for lunch and an hour for dinner, plus petrol getting, toilets and tyre kicking ... 14 hours-ish?

Day2 :

Map :

The route is 377kms and driving normally would take 5hrs 57mins so most likely the same issue as Day 1 timewise.

To maximize collecting vs driving time (less time on the road = more $$) its possible to shorten the route a little and use faster roads :

1) Skip Portlaoise on day 2 (as you've already done Naas and Newbridge + would be doubling back 50 miles on Day 1)

2) Take the M4/M6 stopping at Maynooth or Kilbeggan and Tullamore (which is 5 miles off the motorway and has a new bypass for easy access). Then back on the motorway to Athlone (maybe pop into Moate for a driveby collection on the way).

3) Skip Tuam and take in Loughrea instead, it has a larger population and is just off the motorway too (the road to Tuam is in a state after the recent ice too).

Then Motorway & N18 to Galway, Ennis & Limerick. Unfortunately, google maps hasn't been updated with the motorway yet so I can't see the time saving accurately, but I'd guess that it would be a fair bit less based on the fact that we drive very comfortably from Doughiska to Lucan in 1hour45mins in the Heep.

All the above is just in theory/IMHO etc ... you'll need a vicious time keeper (leamyj is the man ;-) )

I've just had a word with Tom, who's out of the country, and we feel that it might be useful to outline our basic plan.
In terms of fundraising on the run, this is gonna be undertaken by local branch members of SOI in each of the main centres on the route. The fundraising input from ourselves will be in the form of sponsorship e.g. say a downloadable sponsor card which interested members might undertake to sell to friends/family whatever. The time scale doesn't allow us to pursue major sponsorship from other sources.
Once the convoy is mobile, we'll be moving for most of the day, granted, with pee stops and food stops occuring as necessary.
The event is expected to attract national coverage on radio and tv, so people will probably be looking out for us as we make our way around the country.
The final plan is not yet ready, so please bear with us.
Again, simply put, we provide the spectacle and a bit of sponsorship from among ourselves, and SOI publicise the event and arrange "buckets" at the various towns.
It will certainly be possible to alter the proposed route if it's felt to be too excessive.
Watch this space, and please feel free to provide input.

(Thanks Steve for the input above  )

Hi everyone, I'm back. Off celebrating a landmark birthday with a surprise trip.

Thanks John for the contact and updating everyone on the proposed route etc. I hope to have full details within a day or two and I'll post then. However, the plan is to run it along the lines outlined by John and the final route will be guided by the location of SOI clubs.

I look forward to continued support for this fund-raiser.
