MX5's Mondello Fri 16th May

Postby andrew » Wed, 07 May 2014 10:39 +0000

Just a head up for anyone who has not driven their cars on track.

There is a Octane day on all day and there will be at least 3 fast but still road legal mazda's out. There will also be lots of other more expensive and some faster cars too! Not that anyone here is interested in lotus, ferrari's and porsche's.

It's free to watch/passenger and I never seen someone refuse a passenger lap if you have a helmet. If you are coming down feel free to say hello to me (silver 93 with a obvious noise) and we can do a few laps.

I guarantee if you have not been around a track in a mazda, you will be wondering why you never did it before.

I take it you need to sign up if you want to get a few laps in?

Well, I paid the "Backroads" boys a visit in Mondello this morning..managed to blag a couple of passenger laps, dunno if I should be doing this because all it does is highlight to me how underpowered a standard mk1 is in relation to the supercharged versions..but it won't stop me from aspiring to reach that level!!. Andrew and Piers, good to meet you guys, and John, who doesn't post here, thanks for the passenger laps in your supercharged mk1..it was very interesting how your engine management reacted when you lost the supercharger pressure, well done on getting it back to the pits. The biggest thrill though was to finally get a passenger ride with a certain Aidan Farrell in his vauxhall vx220...the speed/braking/acceleration and lines through the corners were an eye opener for me..many of them would just not be possible in a standard suspension setup mx5...

Here's some footage of Aidan in action earlier this year..

Hi John,

Sorry you didn't get a few laps with me, the brakes were still crap after I changed the rear pads before lunch, so after lunch I put new carbon lorraines in the front and braking was much improved. Aidan is a great driver and his car is very well set up, glad you enjoyed it. The Octane days are so much better than open days, great bunch of people and selection of cars. A R8 V10 showed up after lunch and I got a go in the Merc A class AMG - awesome car.

Wow! Last time I saw an R8 being driven in anger was at the Nurburgring, it looked and sounded awesome, and as for that A Class Merc AMG...words fail me, I didn't expect it to perform, or sound as it did. Certainly gonna try to get to the next trackday you guys have, but I'll only be in a bog-standard mk1..but I don't care if I'm being overtaken by class vehicles!!!
