MX5Parts gear lever boot - how long do they last?

Postby Reesy » Tue, 18 Aug 2009 11:24 +0000

Hi,

I fitted a new gear lever boot upper & lower (like this http://www.mx5parts.co.uk/product_info. ... ts_id/1111 but mine may not have been OEM parts) six or seven years ago, & I fear they've failed already cos heat is coming thru from underneath round the gearstick.

Before I take it to bits & look, how long do you guys find that the gear boots last?

I need a new one again now, big hole/split, all sorts of smells coming in from the engine.. right enough, they don't seem to last too long

When I got my 5 first, the boot was in bits and I drove it for a year before realising it. The one thing I do remember is the fierce amount of heat that rose up through the damaged boot. There was no sound proofing packed around it and you could see the road below as the gaiter wasn't great either. I would assume that the extreme heat from the exhaust is the reason for the deterioration in the rubber.

must take a look at mine, felt very warm after a long spin last week, I replaced mine when I got her in Oct 2007 when she had 141000 on the clock so now shes 23K more on the clock..... so if shes gone that should give a good idea of the life of em...

Ahhhhhh, that explains why I can cook on my gear gator!
Thought it was a unique bling I had :)

Yep, took a look at mine & both were worn out. Replaced both & also got a leather gaiter from IL Motorsport too. Problem solved, until the next time.
