Red car, pink bonnet (badly faded)

Postby Reesy » Sun, 07 Mar 2010 11:48 +0000

Hi guys,

Polished the car yesterday for the first time in yonks, & it all came up pretty nice except for the bonnet, which is blotchy pink (it's been like that for a while). I assume it's more faded than the rest of the car, caused by many of the other panels being replaced or resprayed (I think) during the car's 19-year history - I guess the bonnet is original or at least older.

It strikes me as odd that the fading should be blotchy - surely if it will fade, it'll fade evenly?

On advice I tried cleaning the bonnet with petrol to remove old wax, but while the rag got dirty (and that's after the car was washed) the area I tried is now just as pink as the rest. BTW I'm using Meguiars Gold liquid polish.

So what d'you think? Anyone had this problem & solved it?

Thanks guys

Simon

blotchyness happens if the paintwork has been neglected.

it is repairable but only with alot of elbow grease and hard work.
your best best is to borrow/ buy a car polished with a hard foam polishing pad, then use some auto glym super resin polish.

it might take 3 - 4 goes but it will come back to original colour.
becareful not to polish it so much that you wear the paint off through to the primer.

no easy way out - either apply elbow grease or get a buffer and spend time at it

once its polished apply a good wax then a good clear coat.
polish on its own isnt enough to stop it fading.

I look after 6 -7 mx5's close to me and last summer a woman brought her car to me to do a full paintwork correction
i charged her £150 and 2 full days later i was done

the rear quarter took 3 hours but you can see what i had to deal with.

hard old work even with a buffer

Hi Charged_rs,

Many thanks for that. I'm sure somebody I know will have one of those polishers. Tell me, what brand of wax & clear coat do you recommend?

on that red car i buffed up ,

i used 3m machine glaze ( the pics shows the result after just the 3m glaze)
the 3m stuff is the best ever ( removes swirl marks brilliantly , but you need a good stiff buffin pad)

followed by 2 coats of simoniz wax ( hard to work with)
coat of megs gold class
coat of wonderwax clear sealant

job done
