Dodgy wipers

Over the last few days my windscreen wipers have taken to just coming on without being switched on. They stay on no matter what you do with the switch and then just turn themselves off eventually.

Any ideas what this might be? Dodgy relay? dodgy switch?

Ferg, process of elimination here..bound to be one or the other. Check the usual suspects in terms of breakers for a replacement stalk, new relay should be easy enough to source. Wasn't mx5ideways(Kieran) breaking a car there lately?..give him a shout.

oh... I might have my old one in the shed if you want to test it (might have thrown it out though.. )
I've just changed mine recently as the windscreen washer switch kinda started smoking one day.. erk.. just don't use it and it'll be fine

I'm not bleedin using it. It's got a mind of it's own

It stops itself after a while. Thought i could smell burnt stuff today but as most of Dublin was on fire saturday night, it's hard to tell where that smell is coming from

Things have gone from bad to worse. Now I have no wipers at all. Thank God it wasn't raining on my way to work but I don't believe that kind of luck will last.

Does the total collapse of the system suggest any particular item is more likely to be at fault. What are the possible culprits?

I'd start @ the switch and relay first Ferg.
Have you considered that your car may be possessed ??

That makes it easier to source, check the wiring is plugged in properly behind the lever first (have seen it loosen), then check for 12v at the plug, 12v at the motor, etc
