Shocks Leaking, looking for a new set

Postby Vasu » Mon, 01 Feb 2010 5:07 +0000

Hi All
I am Vasu from Co.Kildare, I recently bought a MX5 after a long waiting game, it’s a 2001 model. I gave the car for service and the mechanic said he noticed that the passenger side rear shocks are leaking and need to be replaced. The shocks are ‘TEIN’ make and I am unable to get them here for a reasonable price, best I got was 500 Euros for a shock. Could any one of you please tell me if I bought a different make of shocks like KONI or BLISTEIN will they fit in my car, or do I have to make any changes to fit them. I saw a few in the http://www.mx5parts.co.uk/index.php/cPath/69_71. Thanks for reading.

Cheers

Hi Vasu

KYB AGX shocks are the best you can buy, and they are about EUR100 per corner. They are worth the money, though.

They will fit your car with the existing springs, or you can change the springs at the same time.

MX5parts sell these

Hi Frank
Thanks for the reply, I am delighted, I rang the MX5parts just now and they said KYB shocks will be available on Wednesday, I suppose I don’t have to buy any other stuff for the two shocks.

Cheers

No, you shouldn't need anything else, although I like to renew the lower bolt when I change shocks. Not important though !

You can also change the shock 'boot' - ie the corrugated rubber cover at the top, but... I wouldn't bother. I guess it's more important for 'taller' cars which have more of the piston exposed.

Can give you a hand changing them if you bring them along to one of the tech days
