So before I went away for the weekend last friday, I decided to fold in the drivers side mirror, and it came off in my hand with rust.
So I've looked up some things on the internet about repairing it and I've gotten so far.
I have the glass out in one piece which is good.
I tried to loosen the bolt with the spring on it from the inside the mirror side. that snapped too.
So now I have a threaded bar in the mirror plastic that I need to removed. Can soak this in wd 40 and try drill it out. Any other suggestions.
I went out to the car to remove the other part of the mirror that connects to the door. one screw comes out fine, thee other seems to have the philips head part disintegrated to rusty powder. How can I get this out without damaging the door?
The once I get that out, how do I get the ball bit out? It seems stuck in there.
Finally, the bolts I'm looking for are M4x50 and a matching nut for the main bit, and M6x16 or M6X20 for replacing the ones that mount the mirror to the door. Does anyone know where I can get these? there's loads of repair kits online, but they're just overpriced bolts.

I had this same problem with my passenger mirror. I sourced the bolts, washers etc in a local metal hardware place. For the bolt that is stuck in the door, you will probably have to drill it out. Instead of using WD40, try to find PlusGas. It's much more effective as an anti-seizing agent.

Fez we have good used mirror ,save you shopping for bolts etc.20e and I will most likely be able to get bolt out that is rung off .It can be problem if the drilled bolt stub bit wont then screw out of the door but it usually does.Or try a vice grips on the broken screw head .If stub bit is rusted in to door is a problem as bolt is quite hard to drill out without damaging the door /paint itself.

I can vouch for that !! Drill bit snapped, slipping drill etc

actually managed to get most bits apart. Still have no bolt to put it back together though.
so far I have the mirror fully apart and the ball thing out of the bit that holds it to the door, with the bolt driven out of that too.
The only part I can't remove is one of the door bolts.
So now, depending whether I get a bolt or a mirror first we shall see, but I'm hoping I can attach it to the car with the old unremovable mount in situ.
As robert has no black mirrors, do you suggest I use my old mirror backing, taking apart the new mirror or just respray the new one?

If it's any good to you, you can buy fully painted mirrors new from MX5 Parts UK. I'm not sure how you will fit one with the old bolt still in place. Is the head still on the bolt ? Can you get a vice-grip on to it ?

I don't want to buy a new one, i'll only start noticing other parts to replace then, as they'll put the rest of the car to shame! Iwas thinking I could attach it possibly by reassembling the mirror after I've attached it, so I'd have access to the top and bottom of the bolt. then attach the glass.

On the inside of the mirror use 2 part epoxy resin to fix the new bolt in place so it can be assembled first and tightened on the bracket.

Managed to get some bolts which might do it, Philips head on long bolt which isn't as handy as hex, but we'll see. Would epoxy hold it?

Or liquid metal. The plastic would break before it gave way. Just clean and rughen up the area so it makes good contact. Id say epoxy should work. Probably be stronger than the rest of the mirror.

Think I have a drivers side mirror in black in the shed. I can check for you tomorrow. Same thing happened to the passenger side of my car.

got it sorted kind of last night. Could not budge one of the screws on the door to remove the mounting for the mirror. Fortunately I could remove the other and rotated it so I could mount the mirror to it. We'll see now if it holds up
