Hi,

Turns out that the roof frame on my Mk1 is probably from a Mk2 so the replacement hood I bought doesn't fit quiet right. Anyone have Mk1 frame only for sale?

Both the same bar the extra strapping on rearmost bar to keep the bar pulled back so glass window does not sag due to weight of glass.Easily rectified with bit old car seat belt

That is not correct, the Mk1 soft top will not fit the Mk2 soft top frame - "The soft top by itself will not fit. If the entire soft top frame is replaced, it will. (The NB top has been successfully retrofitted to an NA frame, though it requires some modification" https://www.miata.net/garage/compatibility.html

I have fitted several new soft tops to NA and NB and the actual soft tops are the same so the only difference between NA and NB frames are the two extra webbing straps needed to keep the rear frame overhead bar pulled taut as the soft top is closed .This is to stop glass window sagging due to its weight.Thats why you see few mx5,s with the rear glass window at 45degrees? rather than more upright position

Yes the NA frame is different to the NB frame and we manufacture a specific hood for each frame.

The NB frame has a spring loaded rear bow that moves when the frame is folded back.

Wow they are coming thick and fast now.

Seeing as the hood has already been glued to the frame I think we are just going to keep at it and make it fit as best it can. That's what I have been advised anyway and as I don't know jack shit about it I'm gonna go with that advice.

The impact glue is easy to remove without any damage to the hood because it's new and it hasn't been on the car/hood for years, it's all the rivets that have to be drilled out that create problems especially with the tension cables/springs (larger rivets to be used and cracks in the material can be expected etc). Any hood put on without the impact glue tends to wear/crack faster in places than the ones that have it - Mazda knew what it was doing in the factory and anyone that fits a hood on an Mx5 that doesn't use the impact glue is doing it wrong (take that issue up with Mazda yourselves – I’m not a hood fitter or a mechanic - it’s the ‘Mazda Fit’).

The hood you have right now fits perfect on the frame except for the rear section/rain rail. That’s the tiny little difference in the frames, hence the tiny little difference in the spring lengths between the Mk1 and Mk2 hoods – it fits the frame perfect but not on the car.

I’ve done this type of mod once before on a Mk1 with the exact same issue so I’d say I can sort this out for you – no fee/charge etc.
