Superchargers-Induction kits-turbos & MX5 on Wheeler Dealers

Postby aidanodr » Mon, 10 May 2010 6:45 +0000

Hi Guys,

Is any of this stuff of benefit in an MX ( mine is 03 nevada 1.6 )?

What are the benefits / down sides of such mods?

I realise the insurance aspect and declaration of these mods. But just want to start a general discussion on this topic out of interest.

Keeping it plain english and as dummies guide as possible of course. Real life experience of MX5ers who have modded appreciated.

I am starting this thread on foot of watching an episode of Wheeler Dealers on Discovery Turbo / Discovery Shed recently - it was dedicated to the MK1 MX5. Ed, the mechanic chap on it recommended the a performance filter ( induction kit? ) in place of the standard filter box and piping ( about 4 mins into part 3 at that Youtube link below ). On its own is an performance filter of benefit?

Do not dis-pare if you missed this show - its on YOUTUBE here:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KVrejWJRkI4 - 5 parts, look over right for part 2 etc.

Upps and sorry to the mods - I think I have been a bad boy. This topic is probably in the wrong place. Maybe move to performance section,

Sorry again

Hi there,
Well Ash fitted an air filter for me last year (with a bread knife and butter knife in the p#ssing rain!).
Have to admit, it gives it a nice growl and there is a bit more reaction in the mid gears. Over all it does not make a whole heap of difference to the power. 8)

from my experience , fwiw , is that induction kits and exhaust have a placaebo effect and make the car sound quicker etc

really there are very few gains to be had here , well maybe a few bhp but its right at the top end

bang for buck -turbo or supercharging your motor makes the most noticeable and fun difference.

i once spent 300 quid on a jr cold air induction kit for my mk1 1.6 , loved it cos of the snort from it....would i buy another...no way.not now.

they will give some power but only combined with exhaust mods. No good getting air in quicker if you cant get rid of it. We have a 94 1.8 eunos with a good JDM cat back exhaust around 2.5 inch. Best money i have spent was to replace the cat with an mx5 parts replacement silenced one. This gives so much extra torque low down now that it just stays in 5th all the time. Makes it sound like one of the old bda engined escorts too and and and its easier on juice noticably.
The perfection of a Car's beauty is that nothing should be there for beauty's sake.
