Did a bit of work on the rusty arches, just used the grinder with a wire brush attachment for now so that I could put on some kurust rust converter
Pics of two of them, the others are very much the same

The wheels are on the list for repaint as they look much worse than in the pictures

It looks like you have got loads done to it recently. Well done !
As for the drive, I'm not surprised. There were designed to be more like a GT type car rather than our sharp steering MX's. The Audi TT is another that comes to mind.

Got a bit further on the rust issues, lots of surface rust but nothing has fully perforated the arches yet. I’ve previously ground back and treated the affected areas and so far it’s pretty solid. My intention was to do a full respray but as I’ve (probably stupidly)declared the 5 off the road from the end of the month I’m only going to repair the arches and blend in the paint for now
Pics of some of the work done, only brushed on the primer as it was getting late, has since been sanded down and sprayed properly with primer

While waiting for the threat of thunderstorms to clear I’ll leave the painting for a few days, I can always make a start on the wheels in the shed
Pics don’t show how bad the wheels really are

New set of center caps already ordered, they’re on the usual slow boat

All those 'little' jobs will defo pay off. The wheels don't look too bad, but a set of clean wheels can set a car off really well.

Ya, all the little jobs help pass the time instead of hours in front of the tv.
The slow boat from China wasn’t that slow after all ( probably because they were air mailed), new center caps, lightest of plastic as possible but they’ll do the job

Finished the rust repair this evening so had to bring it for a test drive

Paintwork isn’t great, painted it outside on Tuesday and I’d say it was too warm so the results were poor enough, color is ok but pretty dull

Pic is from the Moycullen to Spiddal road, about 12 miles from me, a nice view looking toward the bay and the Clare hills, unfortunately if you look in the opposite direction the first thing to catch your eye is the windmills.
Ran short of compound when doing it so tried to spare it enough to get the car done, getting more today and some proper polishing head and polish, that should fix it

Not sure if this job is on your horizon, Pops, but I spotted this in last months 'Classics' magazine.

Thanks for that mrges, hadn’t thought of it but will certainly check it.
Updates Steve, as recommended always read the label, I bought the black paint and the wheel paint at the same time but haven’t yet done the wheels, when I went back to get the compound I mentioned how the black turned out, I suppose it was a lack of communication or lack of recent experience but I didn’t realize that it was a base coat, I was under the impression that it was a single pack paint suitable to blow in the repair, anyway it proves that you can polish a turd. I’m now the proud owner of another 1/4liter of base coat and a liter of lacquer & the hardener , the wheel paint is also a base coat so I’ll make good use of it

On the subject of filters, I was having a problem with the car going in and out of limp mode, usually a p0170 code, fuel trim bank 1, seems there’s many causes of this ,,, maf (already replaced) vacuum leaks ( found 1) o2 sensor is another but I left it alone and kept getting stored or pending p0170 after every drive. So, as the car was poorly maintained I thought I’d change the fuel filter, success, engine idle is good and smooth and power seems much better, old filter was the original I’d say
It was a clean basin when I started

The fuel that came out of the filter, god only knows what the inside of the fuel tank is like

Short trip of about 18 miles, car drives much better and no fault codes or limp mode,,, so far

Looking back at the “after “ pictures, it needs another coat or two on the glove box
