Child in front seat of MX-5

Postby Roleary780 » Mon, 30 May 2011 1:41 +0000

Hey all,

Friend of mine is debating whether to get a 5..
He is just wondering is it illegal to have a minor in the passenger seat?

Cheers
Richard.

Hi

I went through this when my grandson arrived last year. Not illegal if there are no rear seats in the car. I took the decision to fit a passenger airbag cut-off switch for when I have the child seat in the car. Choice of car-seat is very important but I have to say fitting it in the 5 is a breeze especially when the top is down.

He really really likes going for a spin in "papa's" car and can recognise an mx5 in pictures - what a smart guy he is!! He also likes to be in front where he can see gearchanges and handbrake operation. A great learning experience as far as I'm concerned!!

In Spain is legal (at least in my Mk 3)

The owner manual explains how to fit the child-seat, and, that you have to disconnect the passenger airbag.

Thanks a million for all your responses!!

Have to say JohnC, I fully agree with you about the best learning position for them! He's looking at a MK2 so would be interesting to know about the airbag cut off switch and Johnv thats a valid point I never thought about the door lock!

goseatonio sorry I didn't make the trip, but hope to see you over this side of the water at somestage!

Thanks again!
Richard.

I'm not planning on having kids anytime soon.. Just in case minds start to wander..
