Road Tax On Imported MX5

Postby Elmar » Sun, 17 Apr 2016 6:15 +0000

Hi,

I'm looking at a UK MX5 car 2000 which has everything that I want.
Could you tell me will the road tax be based on CC or CO2
If its CO2 I won't be buying the car as the road tax will double compared to an Irish car of the same year which is based on CC

As long as it's older than 1st July 2008 it will be on CC. Anything after that is done on CO2.

If you get it make sure to get some pics of it up.

Check for rust.Especially front chassis rails ,on underneath and rear sills /arches.Almost certainly rusty or repaired already

Robert

You have me worried now. I know you have to look out for that sort of stuff on any car but I put into google---rust mx5 mk2 and the results were terrible.
My own MK1 needs a touch up every few years but its not a patch on what people say about the MK2's
The one I'm looking at is on Done Deal its actually a 2002 here is the link

Looks great but really don't want to have to go all the way up to Donegal to find its a rust bucket.
Loads of people saying on line the cars can look fantastic on the outside but are horrific underneath.
Bought a XJS Jaguar when I moved to England looked brilliant until a year and a bit latter when it started to bubble all over.
The previous owner pulled the wool over my eyes according to the body shop I bought it to. That experience has left me with a bitter taste ever since.
Not sure if I want to take a gamble on this.

Its obviously UK car and looking at the brackets for rad etc i would say NO.The brackets themselves are not issue but sign of underlying rust issues.

That car in Donegal will have the same potential issues as any UK Mk2 so the risks will be the same. Having said that, I think I'd rather go to Donegal to be
disappointed than go to the UK for a let down !
I think Robert has a good solution in looking for an original Irish car where the chances of these rot issue are a bit less.
Good luck with your search.

Hi Elmar you could ask the guy in Donegal to email you photos of the areas in question on the car, then decide if its worth the trip. No harm done.
