Lightening a standard mk2 flywheel

Postby Merlot man » Sun, 07 Jun 2015 10:36 +0000

Hello all
I'm interested in getting a standard mk2 flywheel lightened, balanced and faced and was wondering if anyone knew of some place that would do it for me , ideally in the clare ,Limerick , Galway area .
As I understand it a standard wheel is 9.5 kgs and I would like to bring it to about 6 kgs. I don't want it super light like for racing but lighter for better response on the road .
If there's interest maybe a few could be done :D
What are people's views on this idea ?
Thanks in advance
Brian

Whoever ye get to do it, make sure they can dynamically balance it with the correct equipment. If not done correctly , they can explode .

Murfit do flywheel skimming and clutches /brake relining etc but not sure on lightening flywheel and I would not think they can balance them.Ask for Ben ,I know him 30 years approx and really nice lad.Tell him Robert with the MX5,s sent you and he can do a discount etc.I drive by them everyday so not problem dropping something in

Make sure they can dynamically balance it and don't listen to the "it'll be alright" shite. 7000rpm with a good few kg's flying about........ouch.

I've had 3 (edit: 4 actually) flywheels machined down and none of them was balanced. While it's not ideaI, I didn't get any increase in vibrations, and have yet to replace main bearings, nor had my legs cut off despite hitting the 7500rpm limiter several times a day for the last 2 years.

Did mine on a lathe with a dial gauge. Had it going for a couple years with no issues. Running 270 hp on 1 bar.
