Interesting phone call today, which I admit I hadn't actually been looking forward too. I rang my 'paint' man to set up a date for my bubbling and flaking hard-top to be re-done. I calmly brought up the issue of removing the seals and re-prepping the job - and he blew a gasket.

He shouted down the phone at me for at least 10 minutes, which I won't attempt to summarise, apart from a few select highlights.

He'd never heard of such a ridiculous suggestion
Removing the seals would be completely ludicrous
Removing the seals would break them, and I'd be paying for replacements (fine)
I'm ignorant and aggressive
I got the job done cheap in the first place
The 'body shop' that advised me was just making mischief.
The MX5 fans that had also given me advice were naval gazing morons :bom:
However, he is going to do it. :eye:

Teena,

........blimey, those blokes don't like it when they've been rumbled.
Franks right, all that stuff should have been removed and and the HT prepped to be primed and sprayed.
If he was doing it cheap for you, she should have been straight with you and told you he was going to "take a shortcut" like he did. Instead he took your money (regadless of how little you paid) under the illusion it was going be be done properly. It's his own fault. You are 100% right.......and good on you for taking him to task on it.

At an additional cost?

Just wondering............

John

No extra cost for the paint job. Which is fair enough.
I'll pay extra for new seals (which I presume is also fair enough?)

Nope, neither ignorant nor aggressive.
Wouldn't care to publish in public forum.

Thanks for the pep talk DaStig. And thanks for everyone's advice, without which I'd have let this slide, and gratefully accepted crap-job mark 2.

Brings home to me the power of shared knowledge through a site like this.

PS. not really looking forward to dealing with the guy again, but it's a necessary evil until I get the job. However in my darker moments, I'll draw on the image of 15 MX5s pulling up outside! Nice...

AFAIR my window seal was 60 ish from mazda, so probably cheaper on mx5 parts, the shop i used managed to remove the lower rim seal without damage, so we used it again.

hope this helps, just as well you are sorting it as my hardtop had been poorly prepped when i bought the car and the paint was flaking all around the lower seal and window seal. Its only a matter of time before yours would flake there too.

Gas the difference in the paint shops, my one refused to spray the HT without removing the window and replacing the seals.

God, Teena, this is really crap. I hope it all works out for you in the end.
