Spoiler

Postby mrges » Fri, 13 Apr 2018 9:49 +0000

I'm thinking very strongly about removing the current spoiler, and then either refitting it or replacing it with something different. Mainly because -

A) It's not fitted correctly (It touches the rear wings and has rubbed the paint off)
B) I'm not particularly fond of it (tho it's not the worst in the world!)
C) I would like the spoiler I had on my first MX5 (if I can find one...and it's not too expensive)

I went out this evening and undid the 4 screws holding it on - but it's obviously (well) glued on as well (Tiger Seal?). Has anyone removed a rear spoiler before? Is there something you can suggest that dissolves the glue (without stripping off the paint!), so I can then try applying pressure and peeling it off (without completely fecking up the boot lid)? If this can happen I can keep the boot lid and decide what option to take. If removing it is going to feck up the lid then I'll need a new lid to work with.

This is what I have at the moment:

Thanks,
Graham

Forgot to include this query above.....

When undoing the screws on the inside of the boot lid I noticed this bolt......

I'm just curious, does anyone know what it's for? I couldn't see into the cavity to see what it is attached to (if anything).

I'm wondering if that bolt was there originally Graham ? Also, I'm wondering if something like a heat gun might soften any adhesive that's on it ??

So that bolt isn't on everyone's MK1 boot then.... Maybe I'll unscrew it and wait to see if the car suddenly falls apart!!

Good idea about the heat gun - I was worried that it might lift the paint from the boot, but might be worth a try.

I doubt that big bolt is holding on the spoiler?? You could try the heat method as above but if spoiler was well stuck originally you will be lucky to remove it without paint damage.I suppose try is all you can do really

Rub of sandpaper on the underside of the spoiler to give a bit of a gap might help stop the rubbing till you find the spoiler that you prefer

great idea!

Did you try fishing line between the spoiler and boot lid?

Thanks for the ideas. However, the underside of the tips of the spoiler AND the meeting point on the rear wing have already been..... filed and sanded! Trouble is, it was fitted at (slightly) the wrong angle and still hits the bodywork. When closed, it isn't noticeable, but when the boot is opened there's bare metal about the size of a 20c coin showing on the top of the wing.

Steve, I think that is the spoiler I already have on the car (didn't know it cost that much!!)
