I strongly suspect it's because speed cameras, ANPR systems, etc, want the plate to be vertical and reflective so that it can be easily read.

Strange, I put in a query and they've come back and said they can't help me for the rear plate.

Yes, they need to be reflective (and stickies can be) with all the various EU/country/county logos, but I seem to remember there was a specification for plate thickness, I don't see it on the NCT manual anymore though...

Ah, Steve, you have access to the NCT manual? Out of interest, does it include specific rules/guidance on the situation where a normal, legal, full sized Irish plate cannot physically fit/mount? If so, do you mind posting the wording?

Yes, it does, its says you can make the smaller if it doesn't fit.

The manual is here, see section 1, Note 7 :

Yes, but that size is 330mmx178mm, i.e. too big for the rear number plate aperture. My car still has the little U-shaped number plate carriers, and I don't want to have to snap them off just to fit a plate which is basically the wrong size. I prefer to have a plate the right size to fit without modifications to plate or car. :)

"Jap 13"x7"/ 330mmx178mm"

I was in touch with Bernie at irishnumberplates.ie by email and he said, "Sorry we do not do that size. Our Jap plates are 330mmx178mm."
