Hello all, I am the newby I introduced my self earlier, I have now started my Merlot winter messs about (I dare not call it a project, on seeing what a lot you guys have done with you MX,s) I need some info regarding the pop up lights, I need to modify them, when side lights are on,and I turn on ignition I do not want them popping up, in other words I want the park lights to operate seperatly. Has anyone bought the workshop manual on disk as advertised on e-bay, I need some guidance which way to go !! Ideally a wireing diagram would suffice for now. All help greatfully recieved.

Odd, mine only pop up when I've the full or dipped headlights on. Side lights (first click on the stalk) don't lift the pods.
Is this the "Flash to pass" mod?

If I lift up the stalk ign on or off the head lights will lift up and flash. First click on stalk with ignition off, side lights on Second click on stalk with ignition off, head lights lift on dipped beam First click on stalk with ignition on, side lights with headlights up on dipped beam. Second click on stalk with ignition on, Main beam on and side lights. I have noticed the dipped beam looks very weak, possible a bad earth.

No, shouldnt do that. Something strange with wiring. Is the manual button for the raise/lower working ok????

Irish 1989, 90 and early 91 cars do this AFAIK.. theres an extra relay up by the firewall on the passenger side wing under a plastic cover. You can stop this feature by disconnecting the one at the back. Some cars need a bit of rewiring done to get it to work .. you might need to cut the white blue wire and run a new wire off it to the headlight/fog light switch. Wiring diagrams here : http://neomiata.com/garage/index.php

I dont think there is anything wrong with the wiring, i believe it to be an added mod.( the car is 96, 1. I,ll run with Srigley for the minute, and thanks for the wiring diagrams and all suggestions, let you know how I get on.

What Steve said ^
I think it's the middle relay on the NS fender ? On Irish/UK cars, there was a dim-dip lighting system and this relay controlled that. I removed mine practically within buying the car and haven't had any problems.
Tried it on a very early Irish car and the lamps wouldn't pop up - they would light but not pop up.
So, give it a go.
It's a small world after all. It's a small, small world

I just made room today to get into my garage out of the cold. I had a bit of a problem downloading wiring diagrams, late success. Quick look through would seem American and Canadian spec is some what different, but will certainly help. As I am changing the cam belt and alternator, I will have a lot more room around the head lamps when all is stripped out. So hopefully by next Monday i will have something to report. I will use LED on marker lights and improve park lights and will have plenty of room to run cables for neater job.
Thanks Fred

I used to have this problem with my first Mazda 323F - have a look in the interior fusebox for a fuse marked Dim Dip - removing it restored the prettier appearance of sidelights only/headlamps down before going to normal dipped beam with another twist
