fog light for jap mx5

Postby dabofoppo » Tue, 06 Jul 2010 11:13 +0000

new owner here :D
bought an mk2 mx5 rs last week, and the NCT is due in a few months time. i know the NCT are now checking for rear fog lights (they didn't do this before), and i don't think my MX has any. what's the best solution here?

should i convert the rear light clusters to UK/IE ones?
or are there any aftermarket lights that look semi-decent?#

all advice appreciated...

Howdy,

Welcome to the forum!

The stipulation is that a fog light needs to be working if one is fitted (not that one must be fitted).

From the NCT manual :

"REAR FOG LAMP(S)
Method of Testing
1. If the vehicle is fitted with a Rear Fog Lamp, check that when in use, it provides a red light which is clearly visible.
2. Check that the fog lamp is securely mounted.
3. If fitted, check operation of fog lamp indicator."

Cheers
Steve

but then on the same page:
REASONS FOR FAILURE
Rear fog light: Missing or not clearly visible.

heheh you can argue that it can't be missing if it wasn't there in the first place ;-)

Whatever about getting through the test, remember it is dangerous to be driving in this country without a rear fog light that you can turn on in bad visibility conditions even when there is no fog about. Last Sunday near midday on the M2 on the way to the Terenure show, the rain was so heavy that I could hardly see the cars in front of me. Except for the few with their rear fog lights on.
And of course when you run into real fog you will (or at least should) feel very vunerable to someone badly damaging your back end by braking too late because they didn't know you were there.

I guess you could convert the driver's side reverse light with a red LED bulb or this looks good :

the brake light on my mk1's bootlid has been converted to a fog light and passed the nct without any problem.
