my 5 is hurt.. needs help

Postby decoy » Tue, 26 Jul 2011 5:40 +0000

went to a known mechanic yesterday, hoping for decent news but no... after lifting the car it was found that i need a new:

front Left wishbone
Anti-rollbar Bushings front and back
drop link bushings
new rear shocks brake piping
rear discs
and lots of rust to get rid of
rear shocks+ gaitors..( i was already planing on getting a set of KYB AGX shocks

there is also a massive hole in the leftside sill by the rear wheel, the four pannels in the sill have rusted away... if there is anyone that does pannelwork Pm me a quote please, pics up in a bit

Ouch

The rust is the only one I'd be concerned about. Everything else is an easy fix

Apologies for the hijack but would also like to find someone in Dublin area who does panel work - have some issues with paint bubbling in right rear panel. Thanks

I'm gonna be really honest here.

How much did you pay for the car? Don't answer if you don't want to, but I reckon you would be better off scrapping it for parts and going back to the market. Unless of course you've got an uncle or similar who'll do the bodywork for free. There are LOADS of cars out there in much better condition than that, and I believe you'll buy one cheaper than what it would cost to bring that one back to an acceptable condition.

If anyone thinks I'm wrong, please say so.

Sorry to P*ss on your parade, but I got caught similarly last year with a mk2.

John.

i agree with john

all the cars ive broken have been in much better condition than that.

my prognosis is terminal - break it and buy something that needs no work or less work - its not worth fixing

infact i have 3 good mk1 rust free shells here ,
£250 each and all you need is transfer all your bits over to the new shell

i paid 850 for the car, then another 800 for vrt :(....

the plan is to use it as a track car... do whatever needs doing to reinforce it( that i can do myself with TIG).

but the spare shell idea seems like decent idea as well, ill hold on to that

that idea is throwing good money after bad...once rot sets it you will constantly chasing it.

it sounds bad , but seriously buddy , scrap it and start again

i wouldnt even buy a car that bad for breaking due to the rot

chances are its not only the sills but the floor and jacking points will be shot aswell.

I remember one car i bought and i tried to jack it up and the jack went right through the acking point and through the floor.....
most of the parts from that car were that badly rusted i ended up chucking most of it out / weighing them in for scrap....never again.
