New owner of MX5 (MkII) in Dublin.
So far I'm loving it, have it all of nearly 2 months, and of course each time I drive her she makes me smile. I'm looking to put a new roof on it in the new few weeks, not leaking yet but there is cracks in it, so would sooner do it before it starts leaking. So my question is how hard is it to do? I am fairly ok with mechanical stuff, as in just did service myself with change of gearbox oil and diff oil thrown in. What tools would be needed? Best quote I've got is 800 for roof with fitting (and it's not best quality roof), if it's a relatively easy doable job I'd sooner spend the money on a top quality mohair roof and fit myself (would actually cost me about the same).
Any info given is greatly recieved.
Oh I will be doing other work in time, mechanically she's sound so wanna get the roof sorted before it leaks and need to replace whole interior.
Thanks in advance. Brian.

Roof is a fairly easy job. 3 hours taking your time and you'll be fine. Jack smiths trimmers in Wales will supply you with a top quality mohair roof for around 300£ Welcome to forum Ash

the jack smiths hoods use a much cheaper mohair, it looks expensive but its the cheapest fabric you can buy. Plus all his softtops are hand stitched and the stitch lines are nowhere near straight. They are ok i suppose as they do a job of keeping the car dry but for a bit extra you can get alot better.

Right, I think that's decision made, will fit it myself. Ok so if I'm willing to spend more than the 300 mentions here for a higher quality roof is there any suggestions? I was looking at http://www.prestigeautotrim.co.uk, they have hoods from about 260 sterling up to 620 sterling. I was looking at a mohair one for about 360 sterling. Does anybody have any opinion on these manufacturers? other suggestions?

Mine is a Jack Smith Mohair, fitted it about 6/7 years ago, still looks presentable with no rips/leaks.

Hello Brian
I'm in the hunt now for a new hood... your blue one looks good. Just wondering where did you get it in the end, from Jack Smith or the other place, and did you fit it yourself?
Thanks!

After alot of research through different forums jack smith comes up trumps every time. I spoke to him recently and the cost was 315 stg (2 months ago) very nice guy and good quality. I will be ordering from him in the next number of weeks so if there was more interest I could ask re: group buy. Just a thought..tech day assembling roofs??
