Number plates - where from?

Hi guys. Where are people getting their number plates from nowadays?

I've brought the car (mk1 Eunos Roadster) over with me from England and registered it here, so now I need new plates. The car has the standard Eunos Roadster rear panel so I'll need to have the reg number split over two rows. My current (British) rear plate is 305x150mm. The new one could be a bit wider, but not much taller. Both the standard 'square' import plates the local motor factors have are too tall for the mounting aperture.

As for the front, I had the smallest plate I could have that still used legally sized characters, spacings, borders, etc, as shown in the photo below.

The current front plate is mounted on two small right angled brackets which are sandwiched between the front bumper and the front lower chin/lip spoiler. I want to do the same thing with the new Irish plate, so I don't want to use a standard Irish long, thin rectangular plate as I think it will look too big. Ideally I would have the size of the characters matched to those on the rear plate.

The new reg is 93 MO nnnnn, i.e. five digits.

I know I could try local signwriters but I thought I'd ask on here first as there may be existing number plate suppliers (e.g. online) who are used to making up Irish plates for Eunos Roadsters and have the templates all ready to go and everything.

Cheers guys.

PS If this thread would be better in a different part of the forum, just say.

I use a company called Radiator Services in Dublin but not sure if they have website...bit old school but most motor factors have number plate printing machine and can make any size/design you want. Dont forget you will need to get NCT/MOT done shortly so plates must be legal

Thanks guys. Is it possible to fit a legal plate in the standard rear aperture on a Eunos Roadster, i.e. taking into account the height of the characters, spacings, borders, etc? I've measured and the maximum height of the plate will be about 165mm.

Steve, thanks for the link, I took a quick look. They only seem to do pressed metal plates. Do they count as reflective as per the legal requirements? Is it a grey area or are they ok?

How picky are the NCT centres with number plates? Are they likely to get a tape measure out? Do they play it straight down the line or do they tend to use a bit of discretion?

There's a place down here in Cork that do both metal/alloy and plastic plates, also the sticky ones I think. They make all the road legal plates so nothing to worry about etc. There are loads of Eunos Roadsters here in Ireland with street legal plates including mine :)
The NCT centres down here in Cork would fail a car with an illegal plate. I'll do a drive-by in the next few days and get the company details for you etc.

Sticky front plates are a fail. Dont know why but members on here have had issues with them even though I like them myself.I think it was Carlos fandgo that failed

Yep, no problem, I wouldn't want a stick-on front plate anyway. Nothing against them, just personal taste.

By my calculations, with 70mm tall characters, 5mm tall county name in words, and 5mm spacings and outer black border, the minimum height of the rear plate (on two rows) would be 175mm. However, if the whole job lot is shrunk down by just 5%, it'll fit, and I'd hope nobody would notice the difference. ;)

if the aperture for the plate isn't big enough, you are exempt from having the legal size, provided you aren't taking the piss.

Thanks guys. Eireplates.com have a 305x155mm 'Japanese/US Import' plate listed so I've sent an enquiry to ask how tall the characters would be on that plate. (If it's pretty close to the legal 70mm characters I'll go for it, but if it's too different I might just be wasting my money if it gets rejected at NCT and I then have to go and spend more money on another plate.)

Got my black pressed plates from Munster Radiator & Number Plate Services in Gillabey street, Cork City.
Nice chap to deal with, and price was quite reasonable.
I don't think that back plates are legal in my case as it's '92 not '91
