Rear Window Heater wiring

Hi Lads,

Have a 1998 1.6 MK1, with a new hardtop. The connector on the hardtop does not plug into the car connector.

The colour of the wires are as follows:

CAR - Yellow, Red / White, Black
HARDTOP - White, Black, Black / White

Any help with what wire goes with what would be great. Aint gonna fork out €80 or so for connector, am thinking if I can get wiring done can use one of these: 250V 10A IEC 320 C14 Plug to C15 Socket Power Connector.

Also, not sure if it is all wired up correctly. Have switch on order from mx5parts, gonna plug this in and get the wiring above done and hope for the best. I have looked for the relay and the fuse but cannot find them, but am assuming as their are wires coming off the connection on the car they must go somewhere, so Im hoping its all there !!:)

Thanks

Buy a few spare fuses, try a few combinations, you might be lucky and get it first time

I think your hardtop might be a mk2 hardtop, the mk1 car's connector wiring is :
Black (ground)
Red/White (heater element through relay)
Yellow (switch)

Also, you'll need the wee fusebox (it plugs in over near your aerial/battery, might be there already) and a relay, its behind the carpet in the boot on the inner edge behind the license plate.

It is a MK2 hardtop, my old MK2 got robbed at the beginning of March, so replaced it with the MK1 and was able to use the hardtop from it (car was too damaged to repair :(

I was just hoping that because the connector is present in the car, the whole wiring would already be there !!

However, if the fusebox is not there how do I connect it? And also the relay, how do I wire this in?

I see both the fusebox and relay on mx5parts but do not know what to do with either :) A step by step guide would be nice :)

Hey Steve,

So the wiring you mentioned is what I have on the car:
Black (ground)
Red/White (heater element through relay)
Yellow (switch)

So now what does this correspond to on HARDTOP - White, Black, Black / White
??

Thanks for your help.

This is what you'll have to do with the relay

I don't know for sure, the NB car side harness has different colours to those (is it a Mazda hardtop?).

Basing it totally on colour I'd GUESS it would be something like :
black - ground
black / white - switch
white - relay

I'll take pics of the relay/fuse locations later on my car so you can compare.

It is a genuine mazda hardtop from mx5parts.....

The pics would be a great help... thanks. If all the wiring isnt there is it just a matter of running a cable from the + on the battery through fuse, then relay, then 3 wires coming out of relay and connected as below? Guessing:

CAR Hardtop
Yellow - black / white Switch
Red / White - White Relay / heater element
Black - Black Ground

??

Using fusebox and relay like in link: http://www.mx5nutz.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=47700

??

Sorry for stating the obvious....but sometimes the car connector has a dust cap attached on it....just presuming this has been removed.

John.

Hey, I have an Mk1 hardtop on my Mk2 5 and the same problem so I'll be happy to swap the cables with you. Let me know if you're interested. I'm in Dublin but could post it, no problem.

Igor

P.S. I didn't bother with changing the cables, I just took the connectors off the heaters, since it's done only twice a year I didn't bother with the cables.

Apologies for the pics, bad light.
This is the wee fusebox behind the battery :

You can see the relay here behind the carpet panel in the boot (middle left of pic with white base)

Thanks for the pics Steve,

Did ya have to remove battery to see fusebox? Had a look for relay but could not find it... Will have to trace back cables from connector on the rear shelf to see where they go in the boot :)

Aquarian - no dust cap....

Am not having much luck with this :(

Left the car into Mazda garage for service, asked him to take a look at HRW. He said it would be a big job to trace the electrics i.e. have to take out seats etc :0

Is this right? I thought 98 models already had the wiring? It has the connection at the back passenger shelf, and I have the cable that connects the roof to this connection ! Does this mean that just this connection has to be wired up to the battery?
