As you know, we're planning a long trip arround Ireland this summer. We use to use walkies, but their range is too short, so we're thinking in buying CB Radios.

What's your experience with them?

It's neccesary to do some installation (holes, wiring...) or not?

Yeah, we used them on the two continental trips, very handy. Paschal and I were using them on a charity run two weeks ago.
There is no need to drill any holes. The radios usually come with a cigar lighter attachment for power to the radio and the aerial can be fitted to a magnetic base which can be removed in an instant. here are some ebay links

If you want to mount your cb permanently in the dash, you could use one of these:

Be sure to purchase a cb that has all the European frequency options as well as the am/fm option

The radios are regulated to a max of 4 watt output. Straight line, on FM, maybe 2 kilometres, but quality will reduce the further apart you are. When we went to Barcelona last year we always had the mobile phone option to compensate for when the group got split up beyond the range of the cb's. Still, they are a cheap way of keeping in touch.

The question about móvil phones is that spanish conmanies charge huge rates when using outside, so another posibility we're thinking about is buying cheap irish cell phones when arriving to Ireland...
