Airbag and NCT

Postby AdamOC1991 » Tue, 25 Jun 2013 11:36 +0000

Im going to be fitting a deep dish Nardi in the next few weeks and just wondering did I see somewhere before that all cars need an airbag to pass the NCT or am I going mad...?

Thanks

When you remove the original wheel, your airbag warning light is gonna illuminate, and the testers will not be happy to see that. There is a way to cancel the light by putting a resistor of specific rating across the wiring terminal that supply the power to the airbag but you'll have to do a bit of searching to find the correct details..I'm sure someone here will be able to point you in the right direction.

John

P.S. Disconnect the power and press the brake pedal to remove any residual current before you do any sort of work on removing the airbag..you don't want that thing exploding in your face!!!

I fthe car is after 1993 it must have airbag working ....Also light must illuminate with ignition on and go out after approx 4 seconds.Definite fail otherwise. You ca indeed bridge the light but unless NCT tester is asleep ,and car is after 93,you will fail.....

You do not need to have an airbag, even if it is after 93. Plenty cars came from factory without an airbag. My own included. NCT has no way to test if an airbag is working, their only test is for the light.

Due to nct stupidity though you will need a working light. Resistors are the easiest way but most of my cars have had the airbag light wired to the engine management light and have all passed, technically the timing is wrong but once its on and off it will pass. Pretty sure i seen the correct strength resistor listed on mx5 nutz.

Good few aftermarket wheels and bosses take the airbag light into consideration also, so if you have yet to buy a boss, just get one with it fitted to save hassle.

I still think ,especially after 93,that you will need to have an airbag, and my mate works in NCT and that is his opinion also.Best just to fit it for the test day !!Also you may ,depending on model etc, have passenger airbag fitted which gives the game away anyway .

friend of mine had an nardi steering wheel in his silvia and the airbag light was on and failed n.c.t because of it and the tester told him just take out the passengers airbag and they cant fail you when the airbag is missing passed test 3 time withj this done

Might work but if you had a bang you could have insurance issues by having airbags disconnected they will not pay out!!
