Headroom

I drove a convertible MK1 MX-5 I think twenty six years ago and the headroom was just okay.
Yet, I went to test drive a 2006 soft top MX-5 Mk3 today and my head was up against the metal bar.
I could fiddle around with the rake of the seat, but wasn't really happy with it, and my hair was just brushing the roof - irritating.
Is there a reliable way of gaining an inch or so of headroom, like an optional hard top, different seats?
Thanks for any responses.

The Mk3 seats are height adjustable, aren't they?

Foamectomy? Have a look at posts on this topic, but it's been a while since any updates have been posted. paulc.

I think the 3.5's have a height adjustable seat, though they don't go any lower than the MK 3's.
A foamectomy may get me part of the way there, but I'm so clumsy I sometimes have difficulty spreading the butter on my toast.
I was thinking a hard top might work, because they wouldn't have that ruddy great metal bar.

I've driven my mum's MK3.5 with a power retractable hard top and had no problem with head clearance, even with the seat not fully lowered. I'm 6foot tall (183cm).
The seats look different from the previous Mk1 and Mk2, and taking some foam out might not be as easy.

Thank you Steve.
That's a really solid looking approach, certainly something to seriously think about.
