Know any soft top people?

Postby Pete JB » Wed, 29 Apr 2009 3:55 +0000

Hi All, Here's my little dilemma.

I've just fitted a good 2nd hand roof to the car (MK2) if you look at the rear window from the outside there is a rubber strip running round the flap that joins to the roof. This has broken on my car & as a result the roof gets all smushed on one side when I have it down (I think due to lack of tension)

Do you know any roof fitters / repair people that might be able to help me.
Any suggestions welcome.

Pete

Hi Pete,

a rubber strip running round the flap that joins to the roof

You're throwing me off there.
Can you take a few pics so we can see what strip you are referring to?

right, the excellently photoshopped line shows where the rubber strip runs round, it's just under the flap joining the roof to the rear window section, on the 2nd photo you can see whats left of the strip at the bottom. I thaink that because it's worn away the roof has no tension around the back window & crumples when I fold it down, you can see some of the wrinkles on the first photo.

Any chance of a pic from the inside? ;-)

I'm not sure but I think the tension on this bit might be adjusted by tightening the flap which attaches on the inside above the rear window and runs over and into the bars of the frame above your head.

Sorry, I can't help ya there. I didn't even know that could be tightened or that those strips could cause issues. I have a mohair and don't have that some contruction.
What about some PVC glue; since it's on the inside of the flap you wouldn't see it anyway?

Cheers folks, I'll have a look inside & see if I can see anything, I had also though of bonding a strip of neoprene around this to give it more form. Watch this space...
