Mx-5 mk 2.5 won't start

Postby antodoyle » Fri, 11 Mar 2011 7:38 +0000

Hi, i am looking for a good mechanic. My 2004 mx-5 was off the road for the winter and wont start now. Battery is fully charged, starter seems to be making a ticking noise and it wont take a push start. The car is in Finglas at the moment.

hi anto welcome to the fourm it sounds as if your battery is not fully charged or you have a
bad connection the clickiking noise is the starter telling you that there is not enough power
getting to starter check your battery again and connections you can try a jump start
but be careful just watch the connections (+ = red /grey ) (-= black )
hope this helps you

Get a Mk1 ??

Just kidding !

Plus one on the above comment, if there's a 'clicking noise' then your battery may 'look' fully charged but it could have a dud cell in it and not carry the full AMPS required to turn over the starter motor.

There are other things to try but the first one is the battery issue.

(edit) don't even bother trying to push start an Mx5.

Hi Guys,

thanks for the advice. A polish mechanic from OK Motors on the old N1 got it running, through the following sequence;

- Replaced battery, engine would turn over but no spark.
- Found a burnt out fuse on the engine in its own little capsule / pod and replaced the same. Obviously fried it trying to jump start the car.
- Tried to communicate with the diagnosis software on the laptop, but suffered a communication error.
- At this point the mechanic put the key in the drivers door and turned the key over to the open position and held it in the open position for 30 seconds to a minute supposedly to reset the imobiliser.

Hey presto, car started. He would not take any money for getting the car going again, but I dropped it up to him this week for a service, €150 for everything, car running really well.

I must stick a trickle charger on it next winter.

Booked in for its NCT next monday and hopefully some sunny days to go for a burn. :D
