A blocked exhaust would also cause problems like this - especially a clogged up catalyst. Any way to check that ? You could get under the car and give the catalyst a bang to see if anything is rattling inside
It's a small world after all. It's a small, small world

could you unbolt the enhaust system as near the manifold as possible, and put an airline down it and push air through it?

I bypassed the cat a few months ago. So it's not the exhaust.

Keep guessing though. We're slowly ruling things out.

Braved the cold today, changed the Fuel Filter and the Lambda probe, put a bit of Injector cleaner in, so will take a few days.

But I'm out of ideas, it's heading to a mechanic this week, does anyone know of someone who would be good at troubleshooting this in the Cork area?

Hopefully your changes today will have fixed it.. Idle Control Valve seems to be the only thing you've not covered ...

Also, tighten that throttle cable there's way to much slack on it.

Done.

And done a bit of reading, looks like the Idle control valve is next, £350 new, so I will try cleaning it and see what happens tomorrow.

Have been doing a lot of reading up on the air valve and idle control valve. Going to strip both of them off tomorrow and give them a good wash out with carb cleaner. If that's not the problem, I'll try yours Fergus.

Nearly there, hopefully, drove it home last night and it needed to be pushed up the hill, whatever's up, it's getting worse.

Is your car an '89, '90 or an early '91?

If it is.. it might be worth having a look at your crank pulley while the car is running... see if it wobbles ... if it does.. take off the belts, undo the crank bolt (you might need some scaffolding over your ratchet for this) and have a look at the key way...

Lots of info on this here (plus pics) :

Have done that - luckily that's not it. Keyway is fine.

Fergus, I seem to have lost your number - can you PM it to me?

Took off the Air valve and Idle contriol valve and throttle body. Gave everything a good dose of carb cleaner and a scrub - no change.

Aaaaaaaaaghh

Switched in Fergus's throttle body (complete with idle valve) and air valve. No change.

Beginning to get very very pissed off with this. Does anyone know of a good mechanic in Cork who might take a look? This is beyond my abilities and I'm worried I'm missing something simple.
