Steering column play

I've noticed recently a small amount (about .5 cm either way) of side to side play in the steering column of the 5. I know this shouldn't be there so any ideas what it might be? Knuckle joint?

One of the mechanics in work is going to take a look this week hopefully.

interesting link steve,

I do not have a clunk or any measurable free play but my steering seems to be lighter than before, I prefer a bit of weight going into the corners. I have done the full front end refurb and dialed the caster to 5.5 degrees but it still feels over powered.
Let me know if you steering gets any heavier after the adjustment.

thanks

ger

my steering has begun clunking in the last couple of weeks, Looking in from the engine bay, I can see the sterring rack shifting left and right of the mounting bolts. Not sure whether the mounting brackets have rusted or whether the sterring rack mounting bush's have failed :( anyone ever seen similar, looks like it might be a balls to replace em...

edit: just read your link steve ;)

I just had my alignment done, this would hardly have shifted the loading on the steering rack? would it?

doubt it Steve.. did you tighten up the nuts on the rack mounts?

Haven't got round to the fix above yet.
