MX5Ireland

Hey guys, any ideas what the replacement costs would be for a mk1 clutch? Pretty sure mine is on the way out, when I put the boot down in 4th, the engine revs a good 500rpm before catching on...

I saw the below replacement clutch kits on micksgarage for bout 200€. Any ideas what labour would cost?

194€ for a 1.6 clutch kit is expensive

try andy at autolinkuk.co.uk , i think it was £99 sterling for a 1.6 3 piece kit.


fitting , depending where you go can range from £100 to £250
mazda charge £85 plus vat per hour , so a 5 hour job rules them out.

Cheers for the tips guys. I checked out the auto link site. 75 sterling ex vat. Rang my mechanic today though & he said that with my car being an import eunos that there was a risk it wouldn't fit? I wouldn't know a whole lot about it myself but I would've thought they were all fairly standard? He said he'd price them for me anyway so I guess I'll see what he comes back with.

Haha, I'd be inclined to give him the benefit of the doubt, but only just. He probably is not aware of the eunos and it's compatabilities...I know some excellent mechanics who have fallen into the same trap..he was probably covering his own arse in case the eunos wasn't compatible with the standard european model. It's always nice to get one over on them though.

There is NO difference between the 1.6 Eunos/Mx5 with major parts & fitting them - the only difference is with the 'cowboy price' of fixing it if it's a Eunos

We've had this same old crap with Mazda Ireland concerning Mk1 parts for years.

A Mk1 is a Mk1 - if there is a difference with the clutch then that car has been 'seriously modded' for a turbo/super charger and it can only be 'upgraded' for that reason

I've said this time and time before, for years - If the mechanic doesn't know the NON-DIFFERENCE between a 1.6 Mx5/Eunos Roadster then he is either not qualified to do mechanical work on one or is simply scamming you for more money.

In this case concerning the clutch if the mechanic states that there may be a difference between the 1.6 Mx5/Eunos, then chances are he doesn't even know the torque settings for all the bolts between the engine and the trans, or even the clutch plate itself, he probably doesn't even know how to split the engine from the trans to get at the clutch itself. I'd run a mile and so would a lot of other guys on this forum because we've seen this type of carry-on for over 10 years

Thanks for the input lads. @ fergus, in fairness to my mech - he was recommended by a friend of mine and he has done a good job on any other work Ive given him. Having said that, if as you say he doesn't know the difference (or lack of it) between mk1/eunos parts then either he's just not that familiar with mx's or he is looking to scam a little extra.

Honestly, I'm inclined to give him the benefit of the doubt as well but reckon I'll just pick up the autolink clutch kit and get him to fit that.... Unless anyone can recommend a mechanic that knows his mx5's in the Dublin area?!

i could do it but dont have time or the space at the mo. Its a handy job really.

Well, they seem to have had their come-uppance what with falling sales and removal of models from the Irish market. You'd feel sorry for them

its sad really cause their makin good cars lately......

I priced a clutch kit for my 1.6 the other day off my local motor factors and it was only 120 euro, there is really only 2 hours labour involved in changing the clutch , they're probably one of the easiest i've changed
