overheating!

Hi all,
Pick up a mk1 1.6 recently that needs a bit of work. My first problem encountered has been the temp gauge hitting 3/4 after roughly 10 mins driving.
Rad coolant was very rusty looking and the pipe from the cap to the overflow was completely blocked with rusty deposits.
So far I have cleared the pipe and flushed the system with no improvement.
Any advice on the next step?
Im thinking il have to go for a new rad and waterpump minimum.

Rusty water is usually a sign that air is getting into your cooling system. Have a look for leaks at the top of the rad or it could be the rad cap not sealing properly.

Sounds like there was just water and no coolant in it.
Thermo could be blocked up/bust as well, don't forget to put in a 50/50 mix of coolant/water (or whatever ratio for the coolant your using).
I'd take off the front covers and inspect the timing belt first. If it's worn or has some cracks in it then best put in a new one, water pump, thermos etc etc.

There was a hint of coolant in there alright. Your right timing belt will need to be done anyway once I go ripping. Anyone recommend a good supplier in the Dublin/meath area for timing belt kits, thermostats etc?
