Belt squel

Postby soc » Sat, 08 Nov 2014 7:57 +0000

Would welcome any suggestions
Mx5 nb 1.8: have issue with belt squel and then alternator belt snapped . Replaced belts - belt squel was still present then the alternator packed in a day or two later. New alternator fitted (&battery) and still squel returned a few hours later. Mechanic has adjusted belt twice and this works only temporarily. Usually squel comes back after just few hours always at night when lights ect are on. Is there other part of the belt loop that tends to give on these?

Its important to loosen the bottom alternator bolt ,14mm, before you adjust the alternator and retighten after adjustment otherwise you are only straining the adjuster bracket and not getting full adjustment as alternator needs to swivel slightly on the bottom bolt.Other than that the damper (rubber insert) in the front crank pulley can be torn or ripped and the inner metal section loosens on the outer section of the crank front pulley. This can cuse the pulley to wobble also if you look at it when engine is running but do not put your hands near moving parts!!

Check the grooves in the pulleys for corrosion and pitting and replace if there is .
