hi lads,i have a mx5 that has sat up for a year. it started easy first time off,but it only ticked over for around 5mins and cut out.
i thought it was fuel,so popped in some,same thing it starts and cuts out after 5sec,wont rev,just cuts out straight of if you try to rev it.
i changed the fuel pump over then from a running car,same problem,starts and cuts out after 5sec,wont rev.
any ideas,it ran lovely last year,i did nothing to it,made no changes.
let me know your thoughts.
thanks jason

I'd check Ht leads too. If it was parked for a while moisture build up would've affected them. Also, I'd check air intake sensor. Good luck.

Also, check passengers side footwell for dampness if it sat outside. If it is check if it has affected ecu as it did on mine..

hi lads,thanks for all the info,yes i plan to relpace fuel filter with new 1.
passanger carpet damp,so i dryed it,but damp under neath,il remove carpet at weekend.
ive never gone near the sensor near intake.
its just strange she started so easily after a year non use,ran very sweetly,no tappet noises,and then after 7/8mins just stopped! restarts but dies with in a few swconds.
il do as you all say,dry out carpet / ecu/etc and replace fuel filter.
thanks,il let you know how i get on

Unplug the AFM and see if it runs in "limp home mode" - if it does, it means the AFM needs replaced. Other than that, could be the throttle body and the electronic positioning switch built into it.
It's a small world after all. It's a small, small world

Move the flap on the afm and hold it open and see will it keep running.

right lads a up date on the problem mx5.
started the car this morning,started first turn of the key,ticked over for 3mins,reved freely and all,then it started to pulse up and down then stopped! i restart it runs for 2/3sec and stops,you can do that 20 times and it starts and stops.
now,as mentioned i lifter the passanger carpet,oh lord,there was at least 3inch water,i stripped out carpet,and removed the very rusty ecu shield,the bottom 3rd of the ecu had been sitting in water,for a long time! i removed ecu,opened it up and it had rusty water in it!!!. ive stripped the ecu and removed its casing,ive given it a chemical clean with contact cleaner etc,and have dried it out in warm oven.
this afternoon i plugged ecu back into the car.
same problem.starts and stalls.
so do you all think the ecu is damaged due to water,its fried itself and is onlt half working,only runs car when cold and then when warm it stalls??
i did the disconnecting of afm and throttle position etc,all the same.
so ecu change you all think ,ecu number is B63HC, any one have one at a good price??
car was fine when it was used last on the road,but the sitting up seems to have f%ked it up,and floating ecu hasnt helped.
let me know your thoughts

Same thing happened to me. When I was picking the car up it started and was running ok. The next day, as you say, only runs for few seconds and stalls.. We checked everything that could cause the problem but no luck. Swapped for new ecu - off she went! Give autocheck a shout he'll sort you out.

Good to hear you got it sorted at the end and an ecu for a tenner sounds like a real bargain! Nice!
