Bigger, better battery?

Postby emarkey » Wed, 09 Dec 2015 9:50 +0000

Lads, I want to change up my battery. Is it any use getting a physically bigger battery, or just going for a westco one that everyone praises. They cost a fortune though. Weight is not important.
Big one from halfords,
or good quality small one?

I bought a Westco here last Aug : https://www.tayna.co.uk/31M-Westco-MX-5 ... P2811.html
Its now dead... won't hold charge for more than a day or two. I rang Tanya and they said to send it back and they would send out a new one after some testing (it has a 2 yr warranty) but posting it back is prob close to the price of their alternative (which I had for a few years)? I'll pop down to the post office during the week and have it weighed/priced.

Alternatives :

https://www.tayna.co.uk/048-Enduroline- ... P8475.html
http://www.mx5parts.co.uk/battery-westc ... p-635.html

Which are you looking to upgrade, the AH or the CCA or both? Anything close to the dimensions should fit, but be aware if its not sealed or the vent tubes won't fit, you could end up with a rusty boot...

Thanks for that, steve.
Im not sure, cca i think. At the moment Im having to jump the car every time I start it because of my rough start up tune. I need more battery power to help me with my tuning.

Physically bigger batteries wont fit in to the clamp arrangement but you could modify that otherwise its NCT fail for "insecure battery"

Mine had a standard halfords battery in it when I bought it. Had to Put a battery tray out of a prelude in it bolted to the floor. You have to cut the old brackets off the mx5. Mine were rusted anyway. Also had to lengthen the negative wire as well. Passed an nct with it.

FYI, the battery weighed 12kgs and courier back to the UK was just under 30e. Will update when I hear back from them.

Tayna replaced the battery without issue, fitted it last night, cleaned the mold off the interior (uggh) and its back on the road.

I am not sure if Europarts operate near you but they do a Lion battery that is specific to the MX5, I bought one maybe two years ago ow and no problem so far. Also comes with a 5 year guarantee. Downside about £90 but it fits and runs well so maybe worth it in the long term.....
