Cleaning cambox cover , inlet manifold , diff housing etc

Postby Merlot man » Mon, 04 Jan 2016 11:41 +0000

Hello all
I'm trying to clean these aluminium bits on my mk1 and I was wondering if they can be sandblasted maybe as I'm looking to get them looking original. I've painted these bits on other cars before but I don't want that finish this time .
Thanks in advance
Brian

Hi Brian

I wire brushed mine and they came out ok. One the ones that fit into a drill.

I did the same as back_in_black before painting mine and they turned out pretty good I think!

Hi Brain ,just on the blasting. Is it sand blasting, as if so it will remove all the shine/skin off the cam cover etc and it will be clean alright but sort of nuetral creamish colour and will need major polishing to get back good.I get set alloys blasted years back and they came back with greeney/creamy colour but did polish up after hours/days of polishing. Not worth the hassle/time.Powder coat or similar might be handier.

Ya, I had alloys sandblasted before and as Robert said..creamy colour and was a very rough textured finish too!

Hi Brian.. have you ever heard of vapour blasting?? I've come across it lately on YouTube and would be perfect for you. It's like sand blasting but uses water and is non abrasive. I did a Google and found this company www.vapourblasting.ie might be worth it to give them a call.

Brian ,As it happens a mate of mine just bought Granada, that engine was lying out in the rain for 10 years , yes 10 years ...red rotten all over.He is currently doing the electrolysis thing in his wheelie bin at home and its looks brilliant on the eng block ,heads etc.Brings it back to almost new condition .I will ask him to throw in a bit of scrap mx5 part from myself ,maybe a spare cam cover or something just to see how it comes out, but there is mention of it distorting the alloy as it softer metal ?? I personally dont know anything about it but I will call him later today.I will text you a before and after picture of the electrolysis work on the block itself
