Sloppy gear shifter

Postby Neelie » Sat, 17 Sep 2016 3:22 +0000

Guys, quick one. My gear shifter is extremely loose and sloppy, in neutral and when in gear i can make a circle with the shifter, its like stirring in a pot of soup. Gears are all perfect, box is fine, no crunching etc and all engage fine. Just the shit distance is super long. Took out the shifter and noticed that there's no bushings on the bottom ball part of the lever (it just lifts out with no resistance), and the round plastic ring further up is really worn too and the 2 notches dont have any plastic in them either. Is that my problem?? If i replace the ball thing on the bottom and the ring etc will my shifter be sharp and precise again or could it be the synchro? :? I know nothing about mx5 haha bare with me

This , or something similar should solve your problem. Don't know your model but this should fit mk1 , possibily others as well

Yeah the little white nylon cup thingy is what I think is missing on mine. Will get that and see what happens. So tempted to get a short shifter kit to sort the entire problem lol.

Hi Eileen the 5 speed short shifter wont work so not sure if there is 6 speed short shifter kit available. Without the white cup bush lever would be all over the place.
