Steering

Postby rockdrummer4 » Mon, 16 Oct 2017 12:53 +0000

Hey guys,

Power steering is a bit weird, shudders when turning the wheel, also makes a hissing noise when turning..
Had the belt changed recently.

Any ideas, 93 mk1...

thanks C

Sounds like low fluid level, is the belt tension correct

Fluid was very low, so topped it up but still the same. Filled it up with Dexron 3 ATF
I dont think its the belt cause when the AA guy replaced the belt last week, we test drove it and it was fine, just now it is still very stiff!!
Does it take a while for the fluid to work its way through or any ideas?
Thanks C

If it empties altogether and you keep using it you may have damaged the pump. If the pump was dry and you refilled it try raising the front of the car a bit ( just to make it easier to turn the steering) and , with the engine running Turn the steering lock to lock multiple times to purge the air out of the pump and rack

Doubt the pump will be damaged but we have some anyway. Try full lock left to right few times with engine running ,as above. It should come back to normal

That's great you got sorted out - and for minimal expense.

Colin, monitor it for leak as obviously fluid went somewhere and may leak again
