Two keys - thoughts ?

Postby 93 Mk1 » Tue, 21 Aug 2018 5:34 +0000

Here's the scenario: my car has two keys - it was broken into when the previous owner had it and the ignition barrel was destroyed. So I have a different key to start
the car. It's a minor detail but I hate it ! I'm wondering if the tumblers could be swapped out of the barrel to match the original key ? Anybody here done this before ?
A complete lock set if the other alternative but that would be pretty costly i.e. £360 GBP

Dont know anything about resetting the tumblers - would an overall cheaper option be to buy a complete set of locks from a car that's being broken? I'm sure if you had to end up buying 2 complete doors, and the ignition barrel, it would be a lot cheaper than the £360.

Okay, you've given me option #3 ! That's worth considering actually.

Talk to Robert, I’m sure you can get a barrel and key set for much less than you think.
The full key set can’t be that expensive surely?

I looked on MX5 Parts yesterday and that's the price that I saw, including VAT ! But, as you say, used locks would definitely be a cheaper option.
Before I swap out anything, I might talk to the local locksmith and see if they can change the tumblers to match the original key. I remember
doing this myself years ago with a 1986 Golf GTI but I think that was the door handle.

I did this on my camper a few years ago, had to replace a door lock and didnt want two keys. I removed the lock innards, stuck the new key in and swopped round a few of the tumblers till it was almost right, then filed down the remaining tumblers sticking up.

I think the ignition lock/barrel is different.
