Due to some extremely heavy rain lately I had a little bit of a premonition about my car being invaded by rainwater.........opened up the boot and guess what? Yep, invaded.

Due to some earlier postings about the drainholes etc I kinda knew how to do it...but the pools of water behind the headrests gave me a clue!!

Then had to find an original wire coathanger!!!! Had to go to my mams to get one (seriously!!! I am a bit OCD and like to have the same wooden ones........jeezzz I need counselling!)

Anyhoooo.......finally unblocked the right drain hole to unlock 17 years of gunky dirty water!!!! My god it was smelly and horrible.
The left one was grand.

Have had the car drying out for the past two days and have finally gotten rid of the condensation from the inside of the plastic window. Phew.

My car is now about half a stone lighter as there is no heavy carpets or blocked drains and it is a relief to have it done...must keep an eye on it.

By the way...does anyone know of a drain cleaning technique to fully clean the whole way down??

in the middle of something similar myself Valerie, after taking out the passenger seat with a view to lifting the carpet one side at a time only to realise that the whole carpet runs from door to door. Will have to check my rain rail and drain holes , even had to open up grommets on the floor pan to drain out some of the water....mind you driving the car with no passenger seat is cool if not selfish

Hi Val,

I've used some garden wire (maybe 1.5m) like this if the link still works http://tinyurl.com/5lvmbx with a scrap of cloth tied to one end... I pushed the free end of the wire down the drain holes behind the seats till it poked out the bottom, then pulled the cloth thru. Make sure it's only a thin bit of cloth.

Ah John, I was ok doing the drainholes but I dont think I will be removing any seats or heavy duty work!!! Seems to have dried out fine now..just in time for the rain this week! Summer (nay...autumn) my butt.

Simon, I was actually thinking of some kind of weighted spongy/cloth thing..like the idea!! Thanks.

I am bringing Eddie (car) down to Tesco just to give him a run out...he gets a bit jealous and I been driving the primera tooooooo much lately.

I'd say that Mr Muscle drain cleaner should work a treat on properly cleaning the draines. I haven't used it myself, but might give it a bash before they get blocked...

Anyway, found out tonight that my soft top had been fitted retrospectively by some asshole who obviously found a left-over rain rail when he finished the job..just looked at mx5parts and they want £124 plus for a new one, so I stuck the hard top back on and it will stay there for a while.

ah well, could be worse
