BTW - I got my brake lines sorted for WAY LESS than I thought.FYI in case others need this done - I got them done by ADVANCED PIT STOP. He initially quoted me between €250 / €300 to get this job done. I can understand where he was coming from ( in small biz myself ). To do the brakelines the old one needs to be dropped carefully and as is from under the car. Then a new line is shaped exactly like the old one before that new line is then reinserted. Why the huge cost? Well, labour depending on the car. Some brake lines go around the world for sport underneath apparently. Up and over other parts etc. The more of this, the more time consuming depending on car model. It would seem the MX5 is on the simpler end of all this. Took 2 hours labour only. Final cost - €115. They also replaced bleed valves and did the flaring etc etc. AND I had an advisory that one of the lights INSIDE THE BOOT was blown. In fairness APS replaced that also. Cannot fault ADVANCED PIT STOP, thumbs up guys, a recommend from me ALSO A HEADS UP - In NCT recent stats - CORRODED BRAKE LINES is the 3rd most popular FAIL / REFUSAL .. you have been warned

Did NCT retest today - passed no issue thanks to ADVANCED Pitstop and their fitting of new brake lines. Happy again now for another few months

And second time on my suspensions springs being loose, I had put in coilovers a couple months before so I took them at their word and brought the car home. Checked it out and they were all tight, I'm not changing a thing and bringing it back and I know it will pass 2nd time. Just waiting on a date now.

I've taped over the side reflectors every time, and never failed. That's crazy annoying.

My Mx failed due to brake line corrosion and emissions. Having it looked at right now.

But only after extensive repairs to both front chassis rails - extensive cutting & welding by Bob Taylor out in Ballyboughall plus replacement steering rack rubber gaitor on offside plus a liberal dose of Cataclean (half the bottle added to 20 Euro worth of fuel. A big thank-you to Robert McGuire of Autocheck who was spot on with his pre-NCT check which identified all the above in time for me.

Good stuff, do you have before/after photos of the rails by any chance?

I've read somewhere that the reason for the bad rust in the chassis rail area is due to the fact that they placed a layer of paper between each of the layers of metal used in the construction of these rails. Then in our damp area of the world you get an electrolytic effect that speeds up the rusting. In the autumn of 1999 I bought one of the first 12 NB cars to arrive in Co.Donegal and having checked the area fairly well, after discovering the amount of rust on my rear wishbones -ref this thread- viewtopic.php?f=9&p=59078#p59078 my front chassis rails are good. The car has always been kept indoors, but still I'm wondering (and hoping) if it might be the case that the impregnated paper method of construction was introduced some time after the first mark 2's were dispatched. Or maybe they started skimping on the amount or quality of the sealer used to keep the wetness out.

Hi all. My mk1 failed the NCT because of my stupidity . I forgot to tape up the two rear reflectors Anyhow, a quick trip to the nearest spar and a roll of black insulation tape sorted it out. Not bad for a rebuild thats been sitting in the garden for about four years.. John (rebuild might be the wrong word..restoration!!)

Mine failed on emissions at Fonthill, despite having it checked independently before hand. I think the cause of the problem is that the car was sitting with the engine off for 20 minutes and the cat cooled. I will do the retest at Deansgrange, as I did last year, where they let you sit in the car with the engine idling.
After the test, I was sent an e mail invitation asking me to rate my Fonthill NCT experience. The e mail said it was all anonymous. So I criticised the fact the car's engine was left to go cold and worked my way through the rest of the questionnaire. Towards the end of the questionnaire it asked me for the registration of my car - without the anonymity promised in the e mail I thought - well I don't trust you and I'm not doing your questionnaire.
Overall/on balance, things are much better than 29 years ago when I first was in Ireland - back then many cars were death traps, but sometimes I feel the NCT itself is just shoddy. Rant over.

NCT is a necessary evil, as you said Jabout, pre NCT there was some deathtraps on the roads! But as with everything in this country it's been turned into a money racket! Failed mine last week, wheels too wide (15x8) barely poke but do slightly so gonna fit over arches to fuck! Center brake light, my own stupid fault for not checking. Number plate off to the side, he said and I quote "I know it's a Jap import but because you can fit an Irish plate that means you have to" Never heard such shite, plate has standard size letters, county name in Irish and EU flag what feckin more does he need! Anything Jap and modified gets extra scrutiny sure! No actual mechanical fails tho for 2nd year running which is grand, just poxy visuals!
If it's not Jap it's scrap!

Saw a silver 1990 MX-5 going down Belmont Avenue in Dublin this morning. I almost flagged them down to try and find out which NCT centre they used/recommended - I mean 16 years of NCT's is a lot for a little car to get through!

Car passed today at DeansGrange, emissions were perfect. No work was done on the car's engine between the retake today at Deansgrange and the original test at Fonthill. The only difference is that they allow you to sit in the car at D.Grange, letting the engine idle - which keeps the Cat warm. At Fonthill, I had to get out the car and it then sat with the Cat cooling for 20 minutes.

failed the annua on a front balljoint and 'advanced' corrosion on rear brake lines.......not bad considering, have all fixed and retracked ready for the retest, should be good for 14 months NCT
