Re: What did you do to your MX5 today ?Then use red rubber grease (instead of copper) apparently, I dosent damage the rubbers around the brakes
Re: What did you do to your MX5 today ?I've read this alright (causing seals to swell), think it might depend on the type of rubber used, I've not had any problems in the years I've been using it on the MX5/other cars.
Re: What did you do to your MX5 today ?
Had this problem it turned out to be the handbrake adjuster beside the caliper. Get someone to pull and release the hand brake and see if the mechanism is moving freely at the back of the caliper. If its not then remove the 14mm that steve mentioned then get a 4mm allen key in the hole, there is an adjuster in there, wriggle the allen key around and pull and the adjuster will come out its splined so easy to put it back. Spray some penetrating oil in the hole and work the hand brake lever at the back of the caliper where the cable ends until it springs back easily. worked for me.
Re: What did you do to your MX5 today ?Nice one, could be that. Will give it a go.

Re: What did you do to your MX5 today ?I washed mine and then had a little (read:major) freakout that the clear coat was coming off until I realised that it was wax that was in with the detergent just dried in.
Re: What did you do to your MX5 today ?Haven't had much time with work but I put a few of my old fives parts on the new one. Gave her clears all round, removed old rusted grill and replaced with my polished one and then just gave her a good machine polish today.
Next job is to do the audio.... You do not have the required permissions to view the files attached to this post. Fla

Re: What did you do to your MX5 today ?
Did all the above, brake still sticking, took it apart again last night, regreased and readjusted, had someone push brake pedal and release to check it. It kinda looks like the caliper is rubbing on the disk. Will run it for a day and see.
Re: What did you do to your MX5 today ?
I had a sticky caliper on the front, managed to sort it out by carefully pumping out the pistons while the caliper was off, folded back the rubber boot cleaned it well with brake cleaner and a toothbrush, lubed the piston with brake fluid and used a g-clamp to push the piston back in, worked the piston in and out a few times until it was running free, still going 1 year later. Should be easier to do this on the back as you can wind the piston in and out with an allen key.
Re: What did you do to your MX5 today ?Thanks Ger, yeah I think I'll give that a go, at least I'll get a look at the condition of the piston. Will order a rebuild kit if it needs more than a clean.
Re: What did you do to your MX5 today ?You can get a fair amount of the piston out without losing the seal, just be careful not to pump too far and you wont have to bleed, remember to unscrew the reservoir cap also. Stiction in the rubber seals as they dry out is a problem and the fresh brake fluid helps to free them up.
Re: What did you do to your MX5 today ?yeah, cool, that makes sense. Wasn't looking forward to getting the piston back in past the inner seal.
Re: What did you do to your MX5 today ?Replaced the neurotic battery I had for a new Westco. Big difference in cold starts!
Attacked the brake again, pushed the piston out a fair bit (stuck a bit of wood in the caliper to stop it popping completely out), pulled back the boot and slathered it in brake fluid. Tough job to get it back in but its in and seems to be working perfectly so far (couple of 10 mile spins over the weekend). You were right about the piston Ger, dry and sticky, so presumably the seal was too. Must change the brake fluid this week am sure it was boiled a couple of times.
