fitted 4 new drop links which sorted out the knocking/bangs.

The knocking was back... gah... after a few attempts I think I've found the problem. Had never heard of a tophat failing before :

Jaysus, watched that video a dozen times.. Would say bushings, play in shock absorber, loose bolts..etc.. How did the top mount failed?..

that is exactly what I thought too and had the wheel off a few times to tighten various bolts + recheck them.
It looks like the rubber bit in the tophat centre has perished or the bond has come away from the metal.

Did a bit of a google and it looks like its not unheard of.

Ahh, I see! Forgot mk1 has that rubber bit in the mounts. Your ones probably went through use reuse cycle for a bit now. Shouldn't be hard to get replacement. Have you any lying around?.. How's your new setup working out?

new setup is great, except for the knocking in that one.
I've a spare tophat so will swop it out... soon... ish

New Rubber put on the fronts.. the lads had a bit of a job getting the car up. :D Eventually put it up on to a couple of blocks so then they able to get this inflatable thingy in there. They earned their money :D

gah, rear passenger side brake dragging again (hadn't driven the car in over 6 weeks). Regreased the slider pins (again) this eve and readjusted the caliper. Will see how it goes, NCT on Monday eve... erk
