wheel and tyre setups

Postby mark » Fri, 19 Dec 2008 12:18 +0000

hi lads , i'm collecting a 91 mx5 eunos roadster tomorrow and i know the tyres are fairly worn so i'm looking for some general advice

should i keep the 14in original wheels and just source new tyres , and what brands and sizes are best ( not looking to rally the car too much  ) but will need to use it in both dry and wet conditions as an every day vehical .
or should i look at getting a slightly larger alloy wheel and tyre set i.e. 16 / 17 if they fit ? , and would you know of anywhere in the wexford / waterford area doing reasonable deals

many thanks

For a daily driver with some weekend fun I'd go for the lightest 15" wheels I could find (like the MX5 BBS wheels) with 225/45 R15 tyres.. Toyo Proxies from here :

Hi Mark welcomne to the forum,
It goes a but like this
14" is best for handling/acceleration etc
15" for good handling and good looks
16" handling ok more for looks
17" purely for looks

camskills or black circle are great for tyres at the min due to exchange rate, Don't forget to factor in fitting price.

As for the alloys, lightness is goodness. Rota do some which are pretty easy to source, cheapish, relativly light weight and nice to look at.

I have standard sized Goodyear Hydragrip tyres fitted. They are 1 step below the F1's but specifically designed for the wet. I find that although not quite as good in the dry there's still plenty of grip, but in the wet when the Mx5 can be tricky they are a great tyre. No complaints so far.

Welcome Mark.

Stay with 14" if the original alloys are good as this is the standard set up and tyres are cheap as chips.
185/60/14 H is whats recommended but 185/60/14 V will offer you a bit more grip but will wear faster.

Would also be worth getting 4 wheel alignment done when your at it.

Can recommend TOM GERAGHTY TYRES WATERFORD @ 05187377 OR

BLACKCIRCLES WITH DELIVERY ABOUT 26GB POUNDS.

I purchased these a couple of days back from blackcircles and dpd delivered in 2 days but you will need to organise fitting yourself.

I've tried.

14" Prielli P6000s Good all round tyres. Should be cheap 60euro a tyre

14" Yokohama A539s Very cheap and VERY soft tyre that only lasted me about 6months. Stock power should be ok for 185wide Breakaway is very slow and is easy to drift about 50 euro a tyre.

15" Yokohama AO32 Super grip but really soft abd really expesive.

15" Nankang NS2 Ok tyre but they let go very fast and not really much fun becasue of that. 60euro from camskill.
