Car security .. best solutions?

Postby Amri » Fri, 04 Feb 2011 3:12 +0000

Hi all, I'm horrified to hear of all these thefts and attempted break-ins.

What is the best way to secure your mx5?

I've got a hard top, plus immobliser - I've also got a steering lock. How effective are these?

Looking forward to hearing your tips ..

Big dirty chain and lock round the seat base + steering wheel tends to deter most.
Alarm with shock sensor + immobiliser a must too IMHO

Ye defo get a viciously offensive chain and pad lock! Go to a motorcycle store and get a bike security chain. Mine has 12mm hardened steel links with the biggest padlock this side of Dublin! It's under my stairs awaiting the purchase of my mx5:)

LOL you got the chain first, and you'll attach a car to it later :)

Is the steering lock I have next to useless or do they do the job?

Do you want the best and have some dinero ?

- Clifford alarm and immobiliser combo - EUR1000 fitted in Dublin, or EUR600 fitted in the UK (including ferry trip !!!!)
- GPS-GSM tracking device (it'll also TXT you when the alarm is triggered)

Your existing alarm and immob may well be 'okay' - it'll need most scumbags to get your keys before they get the car. The Clifford lets the car run for 30 seconds before killing engine, so it lets you hand over the keys if you're being theatened - the thief takes off thinking he's in the clear, but then has to abandon the car after all the lights and sirens go nuts - and the engine cuts out. Shock and awe :)

I wonder are those quick release steering wheel hubs any good? have been toying with the idea of getting one..

Just afraid the wheel would come off when driving.. :P

Thanks Frank, I've heard about those Clifford alarms, they sound really great but difficult to justify the cost - if the car was worth more than it was then perhaps :(

I particularly like that it cuts out after 30 secs, long enough for the baxtards to think they got away with it, heee hee!

I'll have to stick with the visable deterrents plus a bit of luck :-/

Grr... guess what happened this morning ?

I have AJ's silver '5 parked outside my house - scangers broke into it at 0700h, gave up then moved on to the neighbour's Honda MPV. I called the cops, then chased them once they discovered the MPV was immobile (after bending one of the doors back and wrecking the wiring and ignition switch). The scangers took off in an identical MPV they had waiting.

On the plus side, I was armed with a crowbar so put their passenger window through :)

Cops turned up 15 minutes after I called them - way too late though.

AJ's car has an alarm and immob, but I had the battery disconnected (the car's in a bit of a jock). The roof is ripped over the driver's window, but no other damage. I reckon when they realised there's more water inside the car than there is outside, it wasn't worth playing with the ignition wires :)

Anyway, moral of the story remains that MX5s just aren't safe unless they have a good alarm + immobiliser + probably something visible like a steering lock or something. I have to break the bad news to AJ now...

Hidden kill switch is cheapest and most effective way of your car staying put but wont protect from vandalism.
Cliffords are just too expensive to justify putting into an older car.
Falcon evo 4 predator alarm is just as good.
They have everything an clifford has, and ou can add-on other extra's if you want.

I got this one but didn't manage to put it in before the theft attempt.

http://www.hawkcaralarm.com/CarAlarmsRe ... liser.aspx except I asked them to replace ultrasonic sensors with a microwave one.

I didn't consider the proximity sensor when ordering but I think they have that sensor available and can be added. The thing about the proximity sensor is that I'd like to have it on a timer, and a separate switch, so it it's on during the night. Would probably require a bit of hacking and adding a separate timer and a switch as I didn't see this feature anywhere.

Jeez Frank, was that in Lucan? Scumbags probably needed a ride to get to early mass. That's not the first time you've given chase IIRC, pity the bastards head wasn't between the crowbar and the window.

I nominate Frank for the "Vigilante Of The Year" award at the first annual MX5ireland awards evening ( Details to be announced)

Is that just me but seems more attempts to steal mx5 than usual? I'm glad you managed to do some damage on those scumbag's car Steve. Might be easier for Garda to notice it. Just terrible.
