Nuts for bilstein shocks asap

Postby mx5ash » Thu, 17 Apr 2008 7:11 +0000

May sound like a funny question but does anybody know what size the nut is on a bilstein shock. Is it a fairly std nut? If not where could i get one.

A brief run down of the problem is... KYB shock on the car has damaged threads, dont trust the nut that is on it as that to could be damaged as well, dont want to damage the threads on the new (to me) bilstien shocks that im gonna fit. Not sure if all 4 nuts will need replacing could just be one but cant take the risk of not having the nuts.
Mazda can get new ones but will order from Belgium so wont be here till wed at best.
I need the shocks changed by friday as i am taken the car to galway
Wed is pushing my luck time wise!!!
so anyone know where i could get some suitable nuts in a hurry. they cant be that unusual, can they?

Cheers guys
Ash

idea; take the whole lot to the treade counter of an engineering supply co and source the right nut there to fit.........they always have a good stock in all sizes and grades.........in your area there is - A1 tooling in Tramore - or K&A enginnering in Barrack st? Hope this is of use to you.......maybe not!

best of luck,

Ollie.

Hi Ash,
would you not call into a good accesory shop or hardware/engineering shop with one of the shocks and try some different nuts.. surely you should find some that are suitable, and for good measure get lock nuts as well, if there is enough thread available after fitting the main nut.
Thats my tuppence worth.

Both good suggestion guys, main issue is i don't have the shocks yet. Doh
I'm gonna order them off mazda in the morning and if worst comes to the worst at least i will have em by Wednesday (maybe)
Think i may have bigger problems now though, its possible that the top mounts are damaged and i will need new ones of them aswell. mx5parts have em but they are a shocking 71 pounds EACH!!!!
Gonna check mazda price in the morning but if i cant get all the parts and get em fitted then it looks like i won't be going to galway at the weekend.

Jayz Ash, bad luck. Still , there's a few months of summer? ahead and the possibility of another galway run.

Bring the car to Galway anyway, if you are up early on Friday we can throw the new springs on in an hour between 2 or 3 of us..
I've a spare stock suspension here if we get stuck.

Jesus Ash. Do all of your recent problems stem from the bit of an off roader you had in Kerry (I think)?

Seems she's been up on blocks as it were since then. Tough breaks man, I feel for you. I'd have been out with a large hammer by now

Cheers guys. Steve i will give you a shout over weekend and let you know what the story is. what i really need is some top mounts. Anyone got any lying around?
Fergal - I don't know dude, a lot kind of stems from kerry incident in a round about sort of way. If we ever meet up i'll explain.
Don't think i'm unlucky as such just i let a mechanic work on my car who has shagged a few things.
Never again!

The top hat type things that clamp the top of the shock to the spring? Yeah, there should be two in the shed, let me have a look this eve and get back to you.
