Import VRT question??

Postby aquarian5 » Sun, 20 Apr 2008 4:52 +0000

Lads,
Just wondering if anyone has comments on this.?

If you are thinking about importing a car and you input all the facts/details on the (ros) site concerning the car and you are given a quotation of say 2000 euros, is this figure accurate ?? Or can the quote given vary wildly on presenting the car to the Revenue in person.

Any comments Ivan/Frank/Steve.
Just curious etc......

Not 100% sure john but i think that if you bring in a print out of the qoute they give you online then thats the price you pay.

Yes, its accurate enough (I've always found it to be within 50e of the amount I paid).

Depends on the car.

If the car isn't on the system, they have to send the details to Rosslare, where I'm convinced they pick the figures out of a hat.

If it is on the system, I'm told you can now pay up to €5000 online and not have to present the car for inspection.

The last time I was in they just used the printout. However if you can prove that the car needs some work and supply the quotation you can get a max of 10% off the price!!!!
Also its cheaper to clear a eunos roadster than an MX5 not a lot but every little helps.
My 1989 cost 490 to clear and I tried my best to get the price down the customs guy just used the online reference and would not budge.
Best of luck but its like getting blood from a stone.

John, if you're lucky the Revenue folk will scan the car and go with your print out.......but this is not necessarily the case. I have brought two cars into Ireland from UK, and presented both at the same Office. With the Golf, the girl looked at the paperwork for the car, walked out of the office and looked at the car and the rest was a formality. The second occasion, with a SEAT Leon, also taken to the same office but with a different person behind the desk. She checked the paperwork etc. and came out to look at the car - or so I thought.......the bonnet was lifted and all numbers checked. Then she got inside and that's where the questions began, as she queried the "extras" on the car. "Leather seats, they aren't standard, that should be added on; climate control, that's not standard, that should be added on; I'd better check if alloys are standard fit here...." and so on.

Eventually, she did NOT add anything on, as I pleaded total ignorance - and also pointed out the fact that things like the alloys and climate control were standard on UK models.

So it may depend on whether or not you get a jobsworth.

BTW, I also imported two cars from here into Northern Ireland - when it was much cheaper to do so. The system involved much less hassle....turn up at the tax office with all relevant paperwork, pay yer dues and away ye go (no one had to see the car).

Good luck!

If it's car older than 5 years they don't count the extras.
Other than that go in see what figure they come up with if it's lower than
your quote pay up say nothing, if it's higher show them the printout
and they will go by that.

Make sure you put a Eunos roadster in as as a Eunos, don't put it in as
an MX5 or it will be more expensive

I brought in a car once with the print out from the revenue site and handed it over with the cash. The bloke was dead on, and gave me €75 back saying the system was over charging me - fair do's as he did'nt have to.

Hi ya,

I brought a BMW Z3 from the Uk late last year but the paper work took awhile to come from the UK. By the time it arrived it was november so
umm it was kept on English plates till the new year :o)

Brought the documents to register the car here, and they didnt come out to check the car or anything of the sort. Checked it up on the system and paid the VRT. Happy Days cause it did have leather seats, and a few extras hehe So i suppose its who ya get on the day :o)
