NCT and new penalties.....

Postby 93 Mk1 » Sun, 05 Oct 2014 10:50 +0000

Boys & Girls,

Did ye hear the latest farce with the NCT ??! From the 1st of December any car without an NCT will receive a 3 point penalty
at the roadside from the Gardai. Previously if you have a test date booked, you would be waved on. No more ! Vehicles with
test dates booked but with no valid NCT are liable for 3 penalty points. So basically what they are saying is that if a vehicle
has no NCT then it's not to be used on the road under any circumstances.
The disgraceful thing about all this is that there is a huge waiting list as regards NCT appointments. I was waiting over two
months for my last appointment. I'm all for being legal and complying with the law but I think this is a bit much especially with
the current state of the NCT system and it's backlog. If people could get a test appointment straight away or near as then it
wouldn't be so bad but that's not the case.

How are you supposed to get your car repaired after failing an nct or even get to the nct centre if its already out. I'm sure this is at the discretion of the guard although you you do come across some right jobsworths. 3 points that's a laugh it's only 2 points for driving up a motorway the wrong way.

I discovered earlier this year that you can drive your car to the NCT centre for a test without NCT. If you fail, you can then drive the car to a garage for repairs without NCT, but you can't drive the car to get repaired before you fail the NCT (which was the situation I was in).

Correct Steve. It's very similar to the UK - the only time you can drive the car on the road without an MoT is coming or going to
a test garage/centre. It will be the same set up here.
I agree Ger, it will be up to the Garda's discretion. Hopefully they won't police this too tightly. This is another idea that was not
thought out by our "brilliant" government.
