Another check off on the bucket list

Postby Steve » Fri, 19 Aug 2016 3:48 +0000

So we've needed a few rental cars lately... I eased on into it with something midrange, a Chrysler 200 (3.6l V6, 283hp, 350NM), it was "fine" ... smooth, comfy, etc. Couldn't see out of it though, huuuuge window pillars all round :

The following week, scanned the local rental places and saw an offer on a nice SUV, great.. bit of room, bit of height for sightseeing, lovely, picked up a Dodge Durango (same engine as the Chrysler). Comfy, some toys, did the job, too big for our needs really (* cough *) :

Last week, I said I'd pop down for a car to knock about in for the week, pop down to the shops, quick run up the coast to the beach... something midrange again... ye know, nothin' crazy... kinda came back with this...

For sheer size reference, here it beside a hummer :

And yes, it was fantastic (obv it had the 5.7 hemi which has around 395hp and 410NM). I just threw on a string vest, a John Deere baseball cap, put some empty beer cans in the footwells and hit the road. Ended up doing 600 miles in it, very comfy, lots of toys, it made Nascar sounds with squealing tyres if you (hypothetically) floored it coming off an on-ramp, which would make your 7yr old son (hypothetically) scream "that was amazing it was just like on TV!!!".

To check another box I'll have to visit Hertz next time... just HAVE to grab a Dodge Challenger R/T for a day :

Cool, four of us rented a Chevy Tahoe V8 last year doing a west coast trip in Vegas, did around 4K in it, some beast, extremely comfy bus & could really shift when needed. Mpg was ok too as i think they cut down to 4 or 6 cylinder when powers not needed. bit scary trying to do a donut in it tho :)

oh yeah, they are a big bus, perfect for a roadtrip. The new Suburban is pretty massive too.

Yeah, I had to google if the Ram had it, I'd noticed it sounded a bit funny at times when I picked it up, sure enough it turns off some cylinders at times. MPG was about 24 over all, but it didn't matter really with petrol only 2.10USD per gallon(!)

2.10sd per gallon.Dirt cheap.Drive her on .I was in USA few times and most recent time petrol prices went over the 1dollar mark(2009).Fecking great. We had rental Cherokee 4.0 petrol and it took about 25 dollars to fill it (maybe 20 euro or less at that time)Could not believe it.The we had Dodge caravan ,7 seater 3.6 6 cylinder job , ,great on long runs but bulky around Boston especially that steering wheel was on the wrong side. Great country for cars and car enthuiasts.
