NCT - Jap import

Postby anniniwa » Tue, 07 Jul 2009 4:33 +0000

Hi guys,

Paying the VRT tomorrow on my car and next step is to get it passed the NCT. I read on another thread that the lights may need changing etc to pass...I'm totally confused and wondering if these have to be done then are there other changes also?? Any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks

Hi anniniwa and welcome,

Ive got the same model and no lights should need changing. some people have had problems with some nct testers with the colour of the side reflectors which you can cover up with tape for the test. be prepared to pay for your nct very soon again though. i done my vrt in september 2007 and nct in october 2007 and had my next nct in the summer of 2008. their reason was something about when my car was registered in japan or some sh#te like that.

hope this helps,

Dec

That's right, all you should have to do is cover the rear orange reflectors with tape, everything else should be fine on a Jap model.

Thanks a million, god you serious about having to do the test so soon after initial one?? That's just takin' the Michael in my opinion...like to know their reasoning behind that, so hard to be straight about stuff in this country! Thanks for the advice though, reckon if I apply for NCT now I won't get one til October anyway! lol

Believe it about the nct..I bought a ford focus from a dealer last year, got it nct'd and when I looked at the cert it was only valid for 9 months...they will not shift on the "birthday" ruling. Difficult to detrermine on an import, but anyone buying from a dealer should bear this in mind, might be an excuse to knock a few bob off the price :thumright:

Just to clarify, I got this info from the NCT people, the cars NCT will be due on the anniversary date of the car, but, for some reason, it will be on an even year (2008, 2010). This is because originally, all old cars became NCT able in an even year, a bit silly from the POV of the NCTS balancing their workload, but I guess there aren't too many old cars left about.

Edit: this might explain it better: http://www.ncts.ie/faq.html#3

Yes sadly it's like that. Best to just get it done and have it over with. At least not much should go wrong in 7 or 8 months. Interesting stuff k10. They couldn't explain that to me properly at the counter when I realized how long my cert was value for
