What did I do to my mk1 today?...nearly feckin' choked trying to syphon the petrol out of it, tank was nearly full when we had that incident last week. That didn't work so I took out the seats and the rear parcel upholstery etc., , took the top off the tank and devised a very clever, if I may say so myself, method of extracting the golden nectar..read on...

Tools needed:
1 piece of tubing,
1 petrol carrier/container,
1 vacuum cleaner.

Method:
Place one end of the tubing into the petrol, put the other end into the container.
Switch on the vacuum cleaner and hold nozzle at spout of container, thus extracting all the air and drawing the petrol along the tube. As soon as you get a flow going , remove the vacuum nozzle before the missus finds out what you're doing!!!
Repeat as necessary, remembering to keep the container below the level of the tank for the syphon effect to work.

You WILL get petrol spilt on yourself/clothes no matter how hard you try to avoid it.

omg omg, I don't know where to start with that......it's a frickin' miracle you didn't make the papers.........for spontaneous combustion.......

Petrol fumes, drawn through an electrical appliance - you are completely mad, Ted. There is a very, very good reason that any electrical appliance used in an explosive - yep, explosive ! - atmosphere, has to be Ex rated.

The most obvious one you know of is ..........petrol pump............

consider: you can't use an electrical appliance on a forecourt, becuase of combustible fumes..........but you actually put them THROUGH one ?...

....I'm speechless, actually......

The Vacuum was used to create suction over the top of the petrol container( forgot to mention that the container HAS to be empty, for the very reason you state..FUMES) which in turn causes a vacuum in the tubing, thus drawing the petrol up along it. As soon as the petrol reaches the petrol container, remove the vacuum and the syphon effect takes over.
The tube was see-through so I was able to remove the vacuum hose before the petrol actually made it to the container, although I do see how you would be concerned about fumes being drawn into the workings of the vacuum motor. Anyone trying this must be VERY careful......

j - by dint of fumes being invisible, they WERE passing through it, long before the petrol liquid got to the container. Anyone trying this must be...........mad.

You do know you can get a working syphon for, say €5? Or, to create vacuum, why not use .......a bicycle pump ? or buy a big vet's syringe in the local shop for......€1 ?? Actually, I've cheap Draper oil pump as well.

Upon mature reflection , YES, what I did was foolish
You are correct in pointing out the dangers , rest assured I won't be using that method again.(Unless I'm cleaning out the fish tank :fish: :fish: )

Hey J, not dissing on you or anything, just glad it had a happy ending, but best avoid these situations entirely.

When I was working in the UK, two young lads working in a Mazda garage near me were killed when working under a care, due to a fire, caused by petrol fumes..... :(

Oh, and on the fish tank.........if you must suck water.......pls use a wet'n'dry one !! :D Ask Mrs gtt what happens if you suck up water with an ordinary one.......
